Folder Redirection & Offline Files

  • Follow

I have recently enabled folder redirection for My Documents. I noticed
after I first did this Offline Files would become enabled the first time I
logged on to a PC on the domain. And I'd have to manually turn it off.
I found a KB that was supposed to fix that problem; under User
Configuration>Administrative Templates>Network>Offline Files, I enabled the
policy for "Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline".

But it still turns on Offline Files the first time I login to a PC. Is
there another way to disable that, one that works?

Thanks.

Can you post the KB article link, please?

In the GPO, there are other settings, too. Did you set them as well, with
the following settings?

Computer\Admin Templates\Network\Offline Files:
Allow Offline - Disabled
Prohibit user - enabled
Prevent use of offline folder: enabled
Remove "Make available offline": enabled
Prohibit make available offline: enabled

At the server itself where you are redirecting everything to, when you right
click on the location you are sharing all users' MyDocs and go to the
Sharing tab, click on Offline Settings, what is configured in there? Is it
set to "Files or programs from the share will not be available offline"?

Also, keep in mind, that Offline Folders is on a per computer basis and not
on a per user account basis. If one user profile of a computer is using
offline folder it will try to synch no matter who logs on. This was new in
ich was changed in Vista.
You need to reset the Cache to clear all users offlien folder synch.

MY Computer - Tools - Folder Options - Offline Files - Press CTRL + SHIFT
and click on Delete Files. Then click Yes to re-initialize.

Read this thread, too, for more info. To get to this site, you may need an
account. However, if yoiu simply copy and paste it into a Google Search,
click on the first result, you can get in for free.

Also, I have some info on Folder Redirection I hope you can find useful.

Yeah I saw the other settings. I was hoping to find something that would
let me keep offline files enabled as an option, and just stop it from
automatically enabling offline files. I have not tried those other
settings. I was hoping to avoid a brute force method.

I cannot find the KB article that I found in the past.

I read the Experts Exhange thread (have an account). There really isn't
anything in there that will allow me to fix this without turning it off for
everyone.

So far I have only enabled folder redirection for a few users, myself being
one of them. And I get the offline files being turned on everytime I login
to any computer for the first time.

I created a share off the root and called it Users. In the GPO I used this
option "Create a folder for each user under the root path". The method I
use for folder redirection is one that I found in a "best practices" article
on Microsoft's site. A little different than the method you use, but it
works fine.

I'm wondering now if the only option I have is to just bite the bullet and
use the policies that disable Offline files completely.

The way it works, it would be all or nothing at the share. The way I do it,
is different, and I can select it for specific users, because I am sharing
individual folders. Going by the best practice method, it's all or nothing.

The method I use I had learned from seeing how a couple of large
infrastructures had established it. This way, each individual user only sees
their own stuff, no other folders. yes, you can use ABE to control access,
however I felt it more secure to individualize it.

I guess it's something to think about by individualizing (and hiding, too),
the shares if you want to set it user based.
