Normalization - incompletness
I'm reading Itzik's T-SQL Querying and in the article about
normalization it states:
"The goal [of normalization] is to eliminate redundancy and
incompleteness."
I understand what redundancy is - it's pretty straight-forward - but
can anyone explain the term incompleteness in this context.
Later in the article there is an example of a relation in 1NF with the
following attributes:
OrderID, CustomerID, CustomerName, OrderDate, ...
followed by two anomalities that are examples for incompletness:
1. It is not possible to insert a customer without an order
2. If all orders for a cus

HyperV with 2008R2 Datacenter and high availability
Hello,
I have just installed HyperV R2 (Win2008R2 Datacenter) with Windows server
falover clustoring.
In the cluster, I have 4 nodes and a Iscsi SAN configuration.
I have a question about high availibility.
If I simulate a physical crash of one node withe VM (power crash for
example), Hyper-V is not abble to hold the VM online. The crash is well
detect by the cluster and the VM are migrated to an another node.
But :! the guest OS have crashed before and ae simply restart to another
node. Is there a way to maintain the state 'online' of a VM even if the
hyperv node crash ?

problem with w2k8 servicepack 2
hi,
i want to install servicepack 2 for windows server 2008. looking at the

when installing servicepack 2 it tells me that it needs 4 gb of free space,
which for sure is not given on my virtual machine. my question: what can i do

Before the contractor account expires...
Hi Guys,
We are still running Svr2003r2 in our environment.
Given the fact that over the last months we've had a lot of
contractor accounts expire, and some of those have caused disruption
in the ability for the contractor to fulfill their duties, I'd like to
put in place a process or tool that gives us a head's up to accounts
that are going to expire in the next 2 weeks.
Has anyone ever done this before?
Is this something that could be managed within AD?
Or maybe it could be scripted using something like "oldcmp"?
If not, how can we make this happen?

Windows 2008 Fax Servr
Hi,
Hopefully someone can help me with this.
I am trying to use the Windows 2008 Fax Server on a customers network but
cannot get it to work on the client PC's (all Windows XP).
It works fine from the server and I can receive and send faxes happily.
On the PC I installed the console and then ran the wizard but it only wanted
to add a modem, so I went into Printer and added the fax printer from the
server (this was not shared origanally so I had to do it manually). Now I can
open the console and see all the faxes but I cannot send faxes from the PC, I

question about how Windows Server 2003 handles disk IO
It seems like several years ago I read an article about how Windows handles
the threading of disk IO. It suggested that disk access via drive letters was
faster than mount a volume as a folder under a drive letter.
We have a server is the recipient of disk-to-disk backups, and we have three
storage volumes mounted as separate drive letters, and then we have three
more that are mounted as folders under a single drive letter.
I'm looking for documentation that would describe how Windows handles IO,
especially the performance of drive letters versus mount points under a drive

Mix SAS and SATA Drives
Hi all
Just wondering whether there's any mileage in this - and if it's
reasonable/possible.
Considering the purchase of new servers 1. File/Print 2. Exchange.
There is obviously the cost argument for using SATA drives and also the
speed advantage for the SAS option.
So is it possible to mix the two and have mirrored SAS for the operating
system and key files and use RAID 5 SATA for data and the Exchange database.
The reasoning is that the bottleneck for the operating system will be local
architecture whereas restrictions on data will be network speed/traffic.
Does any of thi

How to connect two domains?
Hi everyone,
I'd like to ask how to connect two domains in two different
subnetworks.
Main AD is in site1 with subnetwork 10.0.x.x
Site2 has 10.1.x.x
They are already rerouted so the users can access resources on the
other network.
With this new network I'd like to have central management so to either
create a forest trust or join site2AD into site1 domain.
I did fair bit of research and even if they suggest creating a trust,
it's just the initial period. Later joining it as subdomain is
recommended.
What I'm afraid of is amount of work that would have to be done.

Server 2003 Unbelievably Slow

The Performance window (ctrl+alt+del) shows at a norma time app. 3-5%.
However, even opening a folder from "My Computer" takes sometimes 10-15

Hi,
I have a windows 2003 server on my network(its actually a virtual machine
running on windows server 2008), that I have enabled remote access to (via
properties of 'My Pc/Remote')
In the permission of the remote user tab, I can not find any domain users,
if I try to change location it only allows me to see the local machine, and
if i enter manually the domain\user name it always rejects it.
I can see the entire network when I browse the network from file explorer
and I can access shares on remotes machines with no problem, so I am on the
network and authenticated by th

Is there any command I can use to find invalid file names? We have a lot

Any disk utilities to correct overly long file names/folder paths?
Hello,
A company I work with has many folders nested within subfolders, within
subfolders with really long folder names that when you go all the way to the
end exceed 255 characters. Robocopy, richtools, etc all fail when copying
these really long folder paths and file names. Is there any utility I can
run to correct these or at least identify all of them? I need to copy a 4TB
volume and it keeps failing. I can't have the server offline for too long
and I can't wait for it to fail to fix all of them.
Thanks

With Vista it appears that 'normal' domain users are not even allowed to

Two permission levels for Remote Access connectivity.
First a brief run down of our relevant infra:
- Windows 2003 native mode AD.
- Windows 2003 RRAS server in DMZ (192.168.0.x).
- Citrix Secure gateway in same DMZ segment (192.168.0.x) as RRAS server.

Currently we allow specified users to connect to our internal network via

Lost or moved folders Win 2003 Server w/ XP wrkstations
Hi,
Several times per year we have missing folders. Most of the time we do a

to the subnet of the LAN adapter on the SBS2003 box (it has 2 NICS, WAN
and LAN). This LAN side of the SBS2003 has subnet 192.168.254.0/24.
I must be able to ping from 192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.254.1
And vice versa.
How do I do this?
I am lost right now...

Read Only Domain Controller - local Admingroup
Hi,
i'm currently testing W2k8- RDOC. I read an tutorial where
i learned that in opposite to a DC an RDOC has a local
admin-group. It said in order to add a user to the local admins
you should use dsmgmt and add the user to the local role
administrators. So i added "testadmin1".
As far as i can tell that worked fine.
But, in my test-domain (where the RDOC is located as well)
i also have a GPO in place, which adds a group called
"client-admins" to the local admingroup on every server and
client.
Now, on the RDOC at the commandline, when i type
"...local roles: show role admini

pdf maker when connected to a domain
Hi,
I have a XP Pro computer that is connected to a domain with a server
(SB2003). I log onto the computer connected to the domain and want to add a
PDF printer to the computer. If I log onto the computer (when not connected
to the domain) I can install PrimoPDF which is an excellent free PDF maker.
this then goes into my Printers folder and works great. My problem arises
when I log on to the computer (when connected to the domain) and then I
can't load the PDF maker.
Is there a way around this or is there a good free PDF maker that can be
installed on the server to be used b

Maximum number of LUNs for Windows Server 2008 (non-R2)
Would anyone know what the maximum number of LUNs allowed by Windows Server
2008 32/64bit are? I recall reading somewhere that Server 2003 SP1 had a
maximum of 256, but I cannot seem to find the 2008 information anywhere.

Re: IPSEC Tunnel
Hi Three Chicago Wolf,
Thank you for all kind help so far.
I have tried both:
and
> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979272/
It still does not work.
The strange thing is, that when I ping it, it gives me either:
* Time-out
* Answer from: XX.XX.XX.253: target not available
(these messages are translated by me. I run a dutch SBS2003).
The XX.XX.XX.253 is an IP from the subnet of my WAN-NIC's IP address.
But... this IP does not serve a purpose, nor did I configure it
anywhere?? The gateway is .1
What else can I do?

Windows server 2008 R2 DEFRAG analysis every afternoon? Automatic...
I am seeing event log event 258 every afternoon at 2pm Defrag analysis
on every drive on this W2K8 R2 box.
The event is:
"event 258" "The disk defragmenter successfully completed analysis on
drivename (X:)"
This is not the Defrag scheduled task, which I have running on the
weekend...
This is a File Server and the time that this runs does not seem good
to me since there are many users with open files at this time.
I cannot find where to disable or reschedule this event. Does Anyone
knbow about this?
Thanks in advance!

Hmm, I guess I did not do this, as I am not sure what you are referring
to.
Can you point me in the right direction?

2000 server with BES rebooting and also rebooting 2003 exchange
I work for a company with 5 servers. I'm having a problem with 2
servers in particular.
Let's call them server1 and server2, server1 is the exchange 2003
server running Server2003 and server2 is a BES server running on
Server2000.
About 4 months ago server2 started rebooting unexpectedly, sometimes
every night sometimes it will not reboot for as long as 4 days.
Everytime it reboots it also reboots server1 (exchange server).
My 1st thought was the BB server. 4 days ago I stopped the BB services
and sure enough yesterday it rebooted and rebooted server1.
I've checked for viruses

IPSEC Tunnel
ARTICLE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816514
I've tried everything the article describes, but I can not get this to
run.
My situation:
I have a network at the company headquarters (HQ), and I have stores
(ST1, ST2, etc).
At the HQ, I have a ZyXEL USG100. The stores (ST1, ST2, ... ST11, etc)
connect to the USG100 using IPSec.
The HQ has 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
and the stores have 192.168.102.0/255.255.255.0 and
192.168.103.0/255.255.255.0 (and so on).
This works great. I can reach all subnets from HQ and vice-versa.
Now, the problem comes in here:
I have a VPS in a datac

restart command not show shutdown title
Hi,
It seems I need to get my hands on a Windows 2008 R2 server asap and see if indeed several things
have been changed as once more I started doubting myself, but it turned out Windows was doing
something strange. :-(
On a Windows 2008 server select Start, Shutdown. By default the shutdown event tracker pops up and
ask the standard question we've come to know from Windows 2003 servers.
Unlike Windows 2003 there is no selection box for the requested action where one can see what the
requested action was, whether that was a restart or a shutdown.
The titlebar however shows: "Shu

Can't print from server
Hi,
I'm managing a network that has several network printers. Everyone can
print to these printers with no problem except from the server. There
is only one network printer that can't be printed to from the 2k3 sbs
server, all others work. I've tried replacing the driver, it is a
fairly old Panasonic Multifunction dp2500, and making a new tcp port
with no success. There is no firewall activated.
I then thought maybe I can just connect to the shared Panasonic
printer on another computer and print from the server that way. When I
do this the test page leaves the server ok but for so

Server 2008 - extend of system partition fails
Hello,
I did an extension of system partition on a server 2008 x64 SP1 which ends
with a "wrong parameter" failure at end. Disk management console shows up the
new size but within explorer and drive properties window still it has the old
size. I did a reboot and disk check (with no errors) - no changes. Eventlog
doesn't show any relevant informations.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

W2K3 Eval key question
The server setup group doesn't seem to be discussing Windows 2003 server
stuff so I thought I'd try here instead. Please redirect me if I'm
incorrect.
Can I use the product key on the original W2K3 eval kit (no SP) I have
for installing W2K3 R2 SP2 eval which I recently downloaded? I have not
used the original eval kit and it appears I can only order a Windows
2008 Server eval kit from MS these days, although I did manage to locate
the download for the 2K3 R2 SP2 disc images at MS but not a method for
getting the key emailed to me. I'm lucky I found what I did since MS
