Mediacenter for music only?

  • Follow

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for software that would allow me to create media center for
music only.

Basically, I'd like to replace my WinAmp or Windows Media Player with
something similar as the Media Center, but I have no need for TV/Video.

Media Center itself is overkill for this, also because it should run on the
same hardware as my media players (which is a Pentium III).

Does anybody have any suggestions for software, similar to Media Center?

Thanks,

For music only purposes, the XP version of MC would run on any hardware that
XP runs on (more or less). The minimum requirements are:. 1.6 GHz processor,
DirectX 9.0 hardware-accelerated GPU (ATI Radeon 9 series or nVidia GeForce
FX Series or higher), and 256 MB of system RAM.

I'm not sure I understand your point about the TV/Video stuff in MC, if you
have no need for it, then don't use it. In fact if you don't have a tuner in
the system, you won't even have the option to any of the TV features (they
won't show up as a menu choice).

All of the other 3rd party "10-foot interface" type media apps (like MythTV)
have video and TV features available as well. I'm not aware of one that is
designed to run on a TV/large monitor, but only supports music. That would
kind of defeat the purpose of it being a "Media" center.

Thanks for the reply, but those hardware requirements are way too much. The
maximum system I can use is a Pentium III/500 (which is already overkill
for music).

I know - but all solutions that have TV/Video, require way too much from
the hardware. Videos running in the background, floating icons etc... all
add to the need of newer hardware.

Basically, I'm looking for software to run on my digital picture frame.
That way, I can use the picture frame beside my computers as my media
player, without having to have Winamp/Media player on one of these
computers running all the time. This also eliminates the sounds made by the
computer actually running Winamp/MP.

Thanks!

Maybe you may like the VLC Media Player.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It will run on just about any hardware.

You Say:::computers running all the time. This also eliminates the sounds
made by the computer actually running Winamp/MP.

My HP Media Center come with Realtek HD Audio Manger
in the Manger @ Microphone or Control Panel to Sounds and Audio Devices
And MUTE that Microphone so you will not hear that computer actually
running....

Now for that Software I like Media Player Classic (MPC) myself
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/

I've used VLC in the past. It's a great player, but not with the
functionality of a media center. It's just a player like WinAmp and Media
Player, using a file browser to search for music.

I'd really like an interface which allows me to browse through my music,
without having to see the actual player.

Thanks,

Sorry - I didn't mean the actual sounds of the machine (fans, HD, etc...),
I meant sounds played through the soundcard as well.

For example: when I'm listening to my music, I can also hear the incoming
mail sound through my stereo, which I of course do not want.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that's basically the same setup as a Winamp,
or a Media Player. It's still a player with a file browser and a simple
playlist.

Instead of having to digg through the filesystem for music, I'd really like
to have a nice interface on-screen.

The best comparison is perhaps that of in-car audio screens: a touch screen
setup which lets you browse through the folders of your connected USB
device/harddisk or laptop.

If there one made or being make Search
http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?form_cat=99

You say:::::: I meant sounds played as well.

Ok Control Panel <<< Sounds and Audio Devices <<<<< Sounds <<<<<< Program
events: <<<<< New Mail Notification <<<<< Windows XP Notify.wav Make it
(None) Apply and it will go away and do the same for all program you do like
hearing through the soundcard just the ones you hear OK

I know that, but I still want to *hear* these sounds.

For example, when I'm editing a video, I still need to hear the audio from
the video. I'd rather not hear the sound of the video, or my incoming mail
notification at the same volume level as my music, though :)

Thanks anyway...

Just when you are Record a video:::: Make it (None) Apply and when you done
Record it (Windows XP Notify.wav ) Apply
you can not have it one way then you need to work that Control Panel all the
time.... or the sounds play back in a your
Audio Record that if you record from your PC ......

One day you will need Capture a talking Video from your Webcam in your
Video Editor and you hear YOU GET MAIL......
or you hear a good OnLineRadio tall Show you will like to Capture the Audio
by your Audio Record for the Guys at Work
and you Get mail 10 time in a 3min show ........ it can happen and did
happen all the time!!!!!!

Recording audio or recording video does not always capture the audio
actually being played on your PC, so no problems there.

When you're editing audio/video, background noises will never be recorded
since they're not part of the original data you're editing.

But I digress, this was merely an example. The point is, turning off/on
sound notifications is something I'd want to do ONCE for a computer, but
never again (nor should I have to do so).

That also depends on your recording software - if I'm recording an online
radioshow, the software only records the show: no line-in, no waves
currently being played. I can watch TV at the same time I'm recording
online audio, surely you're not suggesting that the TV sounds are also
recorded?

But that's not the point - the point is that I *want* to hear
notifications from my PC (including "you have mail" while I'm doing other
stuff). I just do not want to hear them at the same level of volume as my
music.

There's a big difference between hearing the mail notification in the
background when you're listening to music, and actually hearing said
notification at 100dB :)

Thanks,
