Unable to delete or move messages in inmail or deleted folders

  • Follow

Windows LiveMail 2009 build 14, Vista 32: in past few days became unable to
delete any email from inbox, deleted folder, junk folder. Haven't tried
other folders. Also cannot move them.

Tried exorcism and putting needles in a Rubik's Cube, no help. Better
solutions?

Must be good needle to penetrate a Rubik cube

Have you attempted a compact in WLM.
Close WLM
Open WLM in mail mode
Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance/
    - set Compact Database on shutdown to 1, click Close, OK
File/Work Offline
File/Exit

WLM will prompt to compact when closed/exited.
Wait for it to finish, do not interrupt

Open WLM
File/Work Online

Repeat exorcism(ie.. try to delete/move again)
 - Delete from the account folders(Inbox, Deleted Items). Do not Delete/Move in the Quick Views.

Good answer and I appreciate it. Didn't seem to work. I got the message,
"The folder is in use ..."

But, I noticed that I can move some files from inbox to deleted folder or
another folder. However, the contents are lost when I do that. Gone.
Phtttpt!

Also, I am unable to get email on my cell phone now. And when I go to the
provider's email site (frontiernet) I don't get any email downloading.

The problem has metastasized!

The folder in use error can usually be alleviated by closing WLM, opening again, then closing(assuming the counter is still set to
1 and work offline is intact).

Inbox ? Inbox in an account or Quick Views(All Inbox) ?

What type of account contains the Inbox messages(Pop3, IMAP, Http) ?

I doubt WLM has any bearing on your inability to receive mail on your cell phone or accessing your providers email site.

I had the same problem (along with a host of other problems). I tried going
into the folder using windows explore but the emails did not appear there.
Did searches of the entire computer and the emails did not show up either.

Finally had to delete the email account and then open the account up again.
Lost all the emails but fortunately have them on a back-up.

Which? Folder in use message? The simplest way to avoid that
that I have found is simply to open a message with WLMail
(without the application already being open.)
Or, if WLMail is your default mail hander it could be as simple as
Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter:) mailto:
(Then press Esc and answer Yes to the compaction prompt.)

> into the folder using windows explore but the emails did not appear there.

Which would imply that the index is corrupt.
That's what compaction might help.

I suspect that would have been unnecessarily extreme.
E.g. if the compaction didn't correct the errors in the index,
rebuilding the index probably would have, leaving all the rest
your Message Store, in particular its messages, intact
and unchanged.

Thanks for the input. to clearify: the problem existed in only one email
account... so deleting that account "only" lost the emails in that email
account.

Emails appeared in the Inbox folder however, when you click on an email u
get an error message. When you try to delete you can't; When you look at the
folder in W.Explore the folder is empty.

I admit to being adverse to compaction (i'd rather take up the space then
add another layer of alteration). Since the problem is now resolved (via the
extreme step of deleting that email account and then re-installing (or by run
method of trying open individual emails) I will save the compaction approach
for next time it happens (which hopefully will be never).

In the meantime another (and still unresovled issue) is that the "TO" column
in the SENT FOLDER only displays the same info as the "FROM" column instead
of the actuall "TO" address. BTW: the individual emails appear correct and
using the "MENUE" "FIND" brings up the correct "TO" but still doesn't display
them correctly in the "TO" field.

As you can imagine this is a giant pain in the....

The index compacts...the messages don't.
By removing the account, the messages are deleted, the index updated....Compaction could have accomplished the same and then some.

Your symptoms do indicate an index problem(can't find what's present, can't rationalize what isn't)

You're fortunate you had the foresight to backup, not everyone travels down that same path.

You shouldn't be. 'Compaction' is a misnomer, as is 'Recover unused disk
space?', which is what you are asked when a scheduled 'compaction' comes
round. In apps like Outlook Express and Outlook that keep all messages -
headers, bodies and flags - in single database files, housekeeping
('re-indexing' and tidying up) can significantly reduce the size of the
files by removing redundant data. WLMail doesn't work like that. Each
message is stored in a plain text file of its own, with the database
containing only headers and flags. When housekeeping is carried out, it
checks that the database is an accurate record of which files are where and
removes /references/ to those that no longer exist. This usually happens on
shutdown, but not everything is always caught, so periodic housekeeping is
recommended. There's not much disk space released, as the individual
message files are not touched. The process also creates a backup of the
database, helpful if something untoward happens in a future session.

I have my 'compaction' counter set to 1. This means I get the 'Recover
unused disk space?' dialogue on every shutdown; if I'm not interested, it
takes one click to dismiss it. If I've done some heavy manipulation -
downloading, moving, copying or deleting lots of messages - during a
session, then I'll make sure I'm in Mail mode and go Offline before closing
down. Then I'll accept when the dialogue appears. I can't remember the last
time I had an error that 'compaction' would probably correct.

One last thing - don't do anything with message files in Explorer, except
