I have Windows 7 and WLMail.  Sometimes I find that newsgroup messages that
I have read show up as unread again when I go back to retrieve more
messages.

For example I read all the new messages in this group up to 20:00 yesterday.
Today at 13:30 forty of those messages are shown as unread.  This can happen
with other newsgroups not just those on microsoft.public.

Sometimes several days pass without this happening.  I have a suspicion that
it may coincide with messages appearing in recovered items.  No one else I
have spoken to has seen this behaviour.

It's not a great annoyance but if anyone has a fix I would be grateful.

Yes, I've seen this many times, and others have reported it here.

That happens when WLM doesn't have time to "put away its toys" before 
closing.  It doesn't complete all its tasks, including marking those 
messages "Read".  So, when WLM is restarted, it tries to catch up, but it 
does this in the background so as to not interfere with today's agenda.  It 
might put those messages into Recovered items until it gets around to 
sorting them.  (Sometimes a later glitch will cause it to lose track of some 
of those Recovered items and we will eventually have to delete them 
manually - after verifying that, yes, they did show up in the Messages list 
and we did get a chance to read them there.)

It's not always easy to tell when WLM is really finished with its background 
processing.  When I'm ready to shut down for the night, I usually spend a 
few minutes doing other things (Solitaire?) before closing WLM.  First I 
make sure that WLM's "progress window" (that smaller window that shows 
messages being downloaded from each Mail and News account and newsgroup) is 
no longer busy and then close the main WLM window.

But no matter how careful I am with normal exits from WLM, there will still 
be occasional abnormal exits, such as unexpected reboots, and I probably 
will find Recovered items after those events, too.

Another responder has given one possibility and it is a good one. Another is 
that the server from which you receive your newsgroup messages has done some 
"maintenance" and has messed with the message numbers. This happened to me 
on several occasions with a previous ISP. I had to reset the 
newsgroups....what a pain that was.

Does this mean that when the bolding is removed from the message list WLM 
still has more work to do before the news server knows not to send again?

It crossed my mind that my ISP was somehow messing with message properties 
but I see this happening with more than one server so I guess I must 
exonerate them.

I don't find it too much of a pain to reset the newsgroup - work offline - 
open group - sort by time - mark everything read up to when I last looked - 
work online - sync group.

Now looking at it written out maybe it is a pain after all.

I've been trying to catch WLM red-handed but, no matter ill-timed I try to 
make the shut down, I see nothing in recovered items.

Looks like the program needs to sleep overnight before trying to turn back 
time the next day.

The progress window is only visible if
a. Sync is pressed a second time prior to completion of send/receive process
b. One clicks on the icon in the status bar(lower rt of WLM) prior to the completion of send/receive process or while the 'No New 
Message' icon remains(briefly) in the status bar.

happening.

Doesn't the status bar show if send/receive is going on?  If the status bar 
says nothing doing how can I check the progress window to see if it is safe

Oh darn, sixteen minutes after this was sent it turns up in recovered items. 
How can we tell when it is safe to shut down WLMail?

Perhaps WLM was designed never to be shut down.  I will leave it open when 
the pc is next switched off to see if it cleans up after itself.

You asked how to see the progress window(I answered how to see)
RC suggested to not exit until the progress was finished.

The status bar is the solid horizontal(blue on this pc) border at the bottom of WLM(WLM Menu/View/Status Bar)...it is not the 
'Progress Window'

I was wrong about this.  I went to this newsgroup today and 97 messages that 
I read yesterday were marked unread but nothing was showing in recovered 
items.

Is this still a symptom of of WLMail not properly cleaning up on exit?

Were the messages marked as Read before you left the newsgroup 
yesterday?

Marking messages that you viewed as read is dependent on your setting at 
Tools, Options, Read, Mark messages as read after displaying for xx 
seconds.

Or are you using Mark all messages as read when exiting a newsgroup?

My experience has been that intermittently, activity done in WLM shortly 
before closing it does not always get written to disk in the 
Mail.MSMessageStore file.

Hi, Mike.

That's my experience, too.  And it happened a couple of times in just the 
past day or two.  There may have been a glitch or an overload of some kind

Yes, all were marked as read before I closed WLM.  My setting for this is 1 
second.

Every couple of days I get newsgroups showing up with messages marked as 
unread that I have already read.  Newsgroups most affected seem to be 
microsoft.public.live.mail.desktop and alt.windows7.general.

Perhaps it is a coincidence but these are usually the last messages I look 
at before closing WLM.
