Win XP Professional SP3, with all critical updates (including
update KB980182, installed on April 3, 2010)
IE8 - (upgraded from IE6 in stages via IE7. Not sure whether the
upgrades preceded the installation of XP Service Packs 2 & 3).
OE6
Also have WLMail, 14.0.8117.0416 (for HTTP access to Hotmail
account)
This post relates to a long-standing problem, which affects (or
affected) printing of documents from OE6 and WLMail.
When you print a multi-page email, the printed version sometimes
crops approximately one inch from the right hand side of the
first page. The problem doesn't occur with every email and only
seems to affect a few HTML messages that contain graphics. I
suspected there might be a problem with the way OE6 and WLMail
interact with the "Shrink to fit" feature of IE7 & IE8 (which is
enabled by default). I reported the situation to Microsoft last
year and at that time, they advised me that they were working on
a 'known problem'.
I commented on this aspect on a very recent thread in the
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general newsgroup. PA Bear
responded, 'A workaround (but not a fix) has been available since
April 2007 (IIRC). Details available but please begin a new
thread *in OE General newsgroup* - state your full Windows
version, IE version, and tell me if update KB980182 is installed
in your first post.
I am aware of several workarounds, so I regard the printing
defect as a minor irritation, and not a major problem. However,
I was interested in P A Bear's response to the other thread.
Update KB980182 is installed on my computer. However, the FAQs
relating to this update do not mention the printing function. Is
it relevant to the problem?

Does narrowing the print margins help at all?

[Crosspost to WLM newsgroup removed; I did not ask you to crosspost to OE
and WLM newsgroups.]
OE (and WLM & OL) uses the Internet Explorer (IE) print engine and both IE7
& IE8 feature Shrink To Fit (STF) printing. The default STF setting is 60%
(i.e., anything printed will be 40% smaller than if IE6 was installled).
While you can change the STF setting when printing an IE page (via File |
Print preview), you're stuck with the 60% default when printing an OE (or
WLM or OL) message.
While there is a Reg hack [1] to change the STF default when printing an OE
(or WLM or OL) message, it's tricky and the change will become the default
when printing any further messages (in which case messages without embedded
images may be too large to fit on one printed page).
Your best bet is to use one of the following workarounds:
1. Before opening the message to print it, enable (check) the option...
Tools | Options | Read | Read all messages in Plain Text (assuming it's
not an HTML message)
2. Forward the message to yourself, then print it.
3. Begin the forward but save it to Drafts folder without sending, highlight
the message in Preview pane the print via File | Print.
4. File > Print > Preferences > Orientation > Switch to Landscape mode.
[YMMV]
=============================
[1] See the More Information section of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932538.
NB: Ignore EVERYTHING ELSE in that KB article!!
NB: No, it doesn't include a WLM-specific hack so WLM users are on their
own.

Thank you Michael.
Microsoft are truly wonderful ! (Please excuse the sarcasm.)
KB980333 identifies the problem and states that a Hotfix is
available. However, the Hotfix only seems to be available for
the following platforms:
Internet Explorer 8 for Vista and Server 2008 x86 or x64
Windows 7/WindowsServer 2008 SP1 x86 or x64
No mention of any Hotfix for my Win XP 32-bit operating system.
Or perhaps I have missed something.

Actually, the IE8-in-Vista hotfix version would be appropriate...
....except that the (QFE) file versions included in KB980182 (i.e.,
v8.0.6001.22995) supersede the (QFE) file versions in the hotfix for all OSS
(e.g., v8.0.6001.22993 for Vista & Win2003).
Translation: If KB980182 (30 Mar-10) is installed, (a) you shouldn't need
the hotfix (b) nor could you install it.
In fact, MS should have pulled KB980333 when KB980182 was released on 30
Mar-10.
QED: Who's minding the store?!
