New Mail Notifications and IMAP

  • Follow

I've got several IMAP accounts set up in WLM, and the behaviour of the new
mail notifications seems a bit odd.

Problem 1: If I have the inbox highlighted when a new message is received,
it shows up instantly. This tells me that Live Mail uses the IMAP Idle
command for 'push' email. However, this only works with the selected folder.
Mail in other folders, such as the inboxes of my other accounts, is only
received the next time a Sync is performed. Why can't it be instant in all
the folders?

Problem 2: Any new mail received by the highlighted mailbox does not
generate a new mail notification. It appears instantly in the mailbox window,
but if the program is minimized, I will never see that. No sound is played
and the tray icon doesn't even change.

Problem 3: How do I set a popup for new mail notification? I don't always
have the sound turned up, and a small letter appearing in the icon is too
small to notice unless I'm actively looking at the tray.

I'm using the latest release of WLM (version 14.0.8089.0726) and Windows 7
x64.

2. No Imap accounts at this end, but with a sound configured in Windows Sound properties for new mail notification I do hear a
sound shortly after email arrives(and with the speaker on).

3. A pop-up(toast) is not a function of WLM. Is WLMsgr installed and open ?

Hi Martin,

Regarding Problem 1:
You are correct, we use the IMAP IDLE command to get notifications from the
server and this only works for the folder you are currently looking at. We
can only do this for the currently selected folder because that is the
design of the IMAP protocol. In the base protocol and the IDLE extension,
there just isn’t a mechanism to get updates for folders other than the
currently selected folder.

Regarding Problem 2:
This is an issue we are aware of.

Thanks for using Windows Live Mail,
-Kevin Barnes

That may be true, but I think the OP was mainly referencing the inboxes of
*other accounts*, i.e. separate connections, so the problem doesn't apply in
that case. Windows Live Mail should be able to monitor the inbox folder, at
least, of each configured account without the folder being specifically
selected. Other (free) email clients have no issue with this.

Another email client would still have to perform an action e.g. poll, receive, etc to accomplish that task(ie.. the same as WLM and
noted by the OP)

What email client are you aware of that monitors another account IMAP folder(the op's type) without a handshake between the client
and that account ?
