Moving msgs and multiple subfolders from OE (current) to new Win 7 Home
Premium machine. Had to do this once before and had bigtime troubles! Want
to do it right this time. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Transferring data from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail:
For Messages:
Copy the *ENTIRE* OE message store folder to a flash drive. (Folders.dbx
must be included). Place this on the Desktop or other location on the
machine using WLMail. Open WLMail and: File | Import | Messages |
Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and point to where you saved it.
OE Message Store Location:
In OE: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the
location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and
navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.
In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.
For Addresses:
Open the Address Book in OE and File | Export | Address Book (wab) and
save it to the Desktop. Copy to a flash drive. Place this on the Desktop
or other location on the machine using WLMail.
Open the Contacts list in WLMail, (Go | Contacts on the Menu Bar), and
File | Import | Windows Address Book (wab) and point to where you saved
it.
Note: If you use a CD or DVD instead of a flash drive, after placing on
the new machine you must remove the Read Only attribute in Properties
before you import.
For Account Settings:
In OE: Tools | Accounts, select the account and export it to the Desktop.
This will be a .iaf file. Copy it to the new machine's Desktop and in
WLMail: Tools | Accounts and import the settings from the location you
saved them.

The simplest way to move OE folders to WLM is as follows:
1)
In your OE, locate the folder where your mail (the .dbx files) are stored.
You can find this if i remember correctly somewhere in the menu Tools --->
Preferences ---> Maintainance ---> Store Folder
2)
Move the entire store folder to some external location, e.g. a USB flash
drive.
3)
Make this external location available on your new machine with WLM, e.g. by
inserting the USB drive there.
4)
Open WLM and (if not already done) make the menu bar visible by pressing
ALT+M
5)
Go to File ---> Import ---> from OE and then point to the folder where you
previously copied the OE files.
6)
After having done this, wait for a while (especially if you had lots and
lots of emails) because Win7 takes some time to re-index all the files.
Now you should see all your folders in the "store folder" of WLM, you might
find them in a subfolder "imported items" and may need to pleace each folder
somewhere else manually.
If you want to port eMail accounts from OE:
1)
In your OE, export all your eMail accounts by using the Menu Tools --->
Accounts ---> Export
2)
Respectively in WLM, use Tools ---> Accounts ----> Import
good luck

You are using the web site (Windows Live HOTMAIL).
The import instructions are for the Windows Live Mail (WLM) PROGRAM that
is installed on a PC.

Windows Live Mail(WLM) is a desktop installed email client and loads =
from a shortcut in Windows as a stand-alone application.
You explanation below indicates you are looking in your browser(e.g. =
Internet Explorer) which is not an e-mail client.
Have you installed WLM ?
- available at http://download.live.com or =
http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials
(both resolve to the same site for downloading the Windows Live =
Essential applications(which includes WLM, WLMsgr, Writer,=20
PhotoGallery/Movie Maker)
Installation of WLM is necessary to import OE messages into WLM(as well =
access to the OE messages store to perform the import)
