In WLM, have email I can't delete, move or take any action

  • Follow

Hi

I received a junk email that I cannot delete, move or take any action upon.
When I try to do anything, I get the message "an unknown error has
occurred - this email cannot be deleted, moved or whatever". Can you kindly
advise?

Thanks in advance.

Open WLM
WLM menu/File/Work Offline
Close WLM(File/Exit)
Open WLM
Delete the file
Set the compact counter to 1(Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance), Close, Apply
File/Exit
Agree to the prompt to compact(do not interrupt)
Open WLM
File/Work Online and set the counter to its previous value(the default when WLM was installed was 100)

I was in the middle of a draft when there was an error. Windows Live Mail shutdown (XP). When it came back, there were a few emails I was unable to delete. I followed your advice to go offline and compact, but I was still unable to delete the email.

Can you find the exact WLM file in Windows Explorer? If so, try deleting it
there.

If that doesn't work, download and install Eraser (http://eraser.heidi.ie/).
Try using Eraser to remove the file. If Eraser shows a message that it
couldn't erase the file because it was in use, but offers to erase it on
reboot, accept that. The next time you reboot eraser will remove the file.

If that doesn't work, you may have to use a Linux live CD to boot from. If
you use a version of Linux which can read NTFS-formatted disks (assuming
that is what you have with XP), then Linux will be able to delete that WLM
file.

You need to be clear about what you mean by "unable to delete the email".
E.g., if you can't delete it from a view that may mean the view is broken
and the file it represents doesn't actually exist. Tracing the event with
ProcMon could help make that clearer. Then you may find that it is
necessary to _create_ a dummy file with the expected name in the expected
location in order for the View to have something to delete. Etc.
