IMAP setup not working

  • Follow

Hello!

I tried to setup an IMAP account but only incoming mail is working.
I always get an error when trying to send mails:
An unknown error has occurred.

Subject 'Test message 465 IMAP'
Server: 'mail.univie.ac.at'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0B
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 465
Secure(SSL): Yes

Here's my setup:
Outgoing mail (SMTP): mail.univie.ac.at
Outgoing Mail Server: "My server requires authentication" checked and "Use
same settings as my incoming mail server"
Outgoing mail port: 465 (SSL checked)

Here's the working setting tab from Thunderbird 3:
http://i.imgur.com/ok9rp.png

I think I have exactly the same settings in WLM but it doesn't work.

Here's another working setting for Thunderbird 3 which also won't work in
WLM because I don't know where an option for STARTLS is:
http://i.imgur.com/lFx7T.png

Anyone knows how I can make this account (outgoing mails) work wit IMAP?

Thanks

P.s. Anyone knows where I can report Win7 bugs? I've found a dialoge typo in
the German Win version.

I don't believe that Windows Live Mail supports TLS or STARTLS.
There seems to be confusion over how those protocols differ from SSL
(which WLMdoes support), see
http://sial.org/howto/openssl/tls-name/

Have you tried using port 587 without SSL?

There is no specific STARTLS setting in WLM. Just check the SSL box.

Did you try port 587?

Was there any more to the error message? Often there is also a Socket
Error code further down. You might need to scroll the error dialog
window.

0x800CCC0B = Server or maildrop is busy.

Might another program, PC, or device be trying to access the same
account at the same time?

Within WLM, look at
 - Tools (ALT+T), Options, General, Check for new messages every xx
minutes
 - Tools, Options, Send, Send Immediately

If Both of them are checked, uncheck one of them.

Thank you too for your suggestions.
I tried port 587 with and without SSL. It didn't work either.
I also unchecked one of your suggested options.

Unfortunately the error message doesn't say more.

Thanks for your help though.

Make sure you have send authentication enabled when using port 587.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
Enable the "My server requires authentication" option.

If that setting was already checked, call the University help desk for advice.

Yeah, that setting is already checked.

Off-campus access is allowed since everything works with Thunderbird on the
same machine (both ports 587 and 465).

Anyone knows how I can remove my IP-address from a Wireshark log? Then I
could upload the Wireshark logs from Thunderbird and WLM if someone's
interested.
The only thing I can recognize is that protocol TLSv1 is used and the log
from WLM shows some red lines.

If WLM really doesn't support TLS then this might be the problem. But I
checked now Wireshark when receiving mails and there's also TLSv1 used and
receiving mails works.
I really don't know what's wrong. Maybe it has something to do with the red
lines in Wireshark.

Here's one example: Acknowledgement number: Broken TCP. The acknowledge
field is nonzero while the ACK flag is not set

In the link that Magnus referenced
http://www.univie.ac.at/ZID/anleitungen-mailing/windowsmail/
I see no mention of TLS. It specifies using port 465 with SSL.
If that doesn't work, then I don't know what else to suggest.

It acts like the "My server requires authentication setting" is not
taking effect. Try deleting the account, restarting WLM, then
recreate the account.

Check the settings button next to the My Server Requires Authentication.

Normally there you say to use the Incoming server settings. This
assumes that the incoming server is for the same mail service (and is
working).

You can also specifically put in your account name and password.

I think I've tried already all settings.
I'm going to try it with the last final WLM version on another machine.
Maybe it's working there. If not then WLM is definitely somehow causing
this. Maybe it also have something to do with my "exotic" internet
connection.
Even Win 7 behaved weirdly with my ISP first.

Thanks for your help though!

Check the settings button next to the My Server Requires Authentication.

Normally there you say to use the Incoming server settings. This
assumes that the incoming server is for the same mail service (and is
working).

You can also specifically put in your account name and password.

Okay, I've setup this IMAP account with exactly the same settings (through
VNC) on another machine with WLM 14 and it worked.
So I did like Gary suggested an deleted that account in WLM 15 Beta and
started from scratch and voil, it mysteriously works now.
I really don't know what was causing this since I've used exactly the same
settings as before and now it works.

Thanks for the feedback.
As I said previously, it appeared to me from your error message that WLM
was ignoring the "My server requires authentication" setting, which can
indicate a corrupted mail account.
