If you configure your Hotmail account in WLM, it will automatically use
DeltaSync which will sync all your folders and messages in Windows Live
Mail. If you use POP, only messages from Hotmail's Inbox will be
downloaded in WLM (Hotmail-Inbox).
PS: there are no subfolders in Hotmail (you can't create from Web or
email clients but I think you are referring to personal folders)

You can't change the protocol once it has been configured. Do this:
Add a new account. After entering your @hotmail.com email address,
do not tick the "Manually configure server settings..." box.
Windows Live Mail will automatically configure that account to use the
DeltaSync server.

Wouldn't this be past tense..since the messages were on XP and now desired to be on Win7 ?
If you 'configured' etc...
Setting up using DeltaSync after the fact on Win7, won't bring any messages from XP, if XP was using Pop3, but it will rebuild the
folder structure and messages if DeltaSync was in used on XP.
