Duplicates in Windows Live Mail

  • Follow

After reformatting (don't go there unless you have to) and downloading WLM my
contacts list (address book) is duplicated with each entry repeted 3-4 times.
I started to manually delete but looked for a faster way. Winston posted that
I could try going to my contacts in LiveID. They are there and not
duplicated. Yay! But now I need to know how to import them to my WLM desktop.
I am gun shy about this cuz each time I tried "things" I just got another
copy. I also don't want to lose the contacts (they are backed up on an
external hard drive).

Also my mail accounts are duplicated. When I deleted one of the 2 identical
accounts BOTH went away. No more account. Had to add the account back BUT
lost the stored emails. KC

Did you have "Save a copy on server" enabled? If so, some emails may be on
the web access.

Deleting an account(Pop3) in WLM deletes the account and all messages from WLM and your hard drive.

Deleting a Hotmail account(when setup as an http account, not pop3) in WLM removes the account from WLM but does not delete the
account or the contents in the Hotmail web user interface(UI).

If the contacts are present in the web UI at contacts.live.com
0. Close WLM
1. Open Internet Explorer(IE) and go to Contacts.live.com (logon with your Live ID)
2. Verify the contacts are still present
3. Click Manage then Export. Enter the 8 character verification when prompted.
4. Save the contacts to a CSV file to a location on your hard drive(remember the location)
5. Click SignOut(upper right) or close IE
6.** Open WLM and logon to Windows Live with the same Live ID used in step 1
**Note: If by chance you find that you do not receive a prompt to logon to Windows Live when opening WLM
 - click Tools/Options/Connections/Sign In
or
 - Alt T, click Options/Connections/Sign In

7. Windows Live Mail will sync with the web UI and download your contacts. Do Not abort the process or close WLM(though you can
access Contacts to watch the progress - Control Shift C or click the Contacts button in the lower left of WLM or from the WLM
Menu/Go/Contacts.
8. Once complete peform a Sycn(Control F5)

Thereafter use the same Live ID to logon to Windows Live services(your contacts are tied to that Live ID)

On the Comcast account I lost it was set up to save messages 30 days
(default). I have changed that to NEVER so there's a tip for everyone. I have
lost my messages that were over 30 days old but it is not a tragedy. Thanks,
KC

Winston-it worked like a charm! All contacts including our groups are "pre
format". The process also got the "list by first or last name" back to not
listing them by nickname. That was a weird. Thank you, KC

Well done kc...

You are welcome and glad to hear you contacts are back in order.

Nomenclature: In OE and other email clients distribution lists were called groups. In this version of WLMail, Msgr, and Hotmail,
they are called 'categories'.

Groups in Windows Live is a group of people granted permission to and capable of accessing a shared Live service to exchange
comments and other info.

Fyi, with respect to Contacts..
 - Occasionally, use the web UI to export your contacts to a Csv file instead of using WLM. The web UI is more robust and capable
of exporting more data fields entered into a given contact(e.g. other email, work email, IM address, and categories). WLM can only
export **one** email field and it does not export categories.

Additionally if you decide to use another Live ID for some other reason, you may have common contacts for that same purpose...just
import into the other Live ID and edit/delete accordingly.

Good Luck.
