I can receive e-mails but not send them.
Dialogue box states:
"Please enter your user name and password for the following server.
server: smtp.frontier.com
user name: ___________
password: _____________"
(I've not filled in user name & password here.)
Is this a settings, or hardware (server) problem?
Do I fix by changing live mail settings, or call my DSL provider regarding
their modem/router?

Has this e-mail account ever worked? You can't have an e-mail account
without a username and password.
Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers. Is there a username and PW
set up there? It won't work without one.

That server uses SMTP Authentication.
In Outlook Express/Vista Windows Mail/Windows Live Mail SMTP
Authentication is specified at Tools (ALT+T), Accounts, Mail,
Properties, Servers, Outgoing Mail Server, My Server Requires
Authentication.
Also click the SETTINGS button there. Usually you tell it to use the
same settings as the Incoming server. You may have it set to use
specific settings and they are missing or wrong.

When you get that repeated prompt for username and password, click Cancel,
which should then produce an error message. Right-click on your error message,
copy, then paste it into a reply here. We can't do much troubleshooting without
the complete error message.

Bruce, You seem to know what you're talking about... maybe you can help me.
my live.com email address was working fine on my iphone, until recently. I
had changed my password earlier, and went into settings to change it there as
well, but when I try to send mail from that livemail account, it says
username and password are incorrect, even though i corrected it in my mail
settings. any suggestions? It is working from my home computer after some
trouble there as well...
any suggestions are really appreciated.
thanks.

Are you able to receive on the Live Account?
Live uses SMTP Authentication which means that sending also requires a
user name and password. Most mail clients have a setting for sending to
use the same user name and password as POP3 does for receiving. But the
iPhone might have separate POP3 and SMTP settings. So check that the
SMTP user name and password are the same as your POP3 ones.

See this article for applicability

- Fyi....close the desktop email client and then test the iPhone(and =
vice versa)
Your iPhone should have settings for 'User Name' and 'Password' for both =
Incoming and Outgoing server.
- Ensure the username in each location meets the requirements for that =
email address.
If the account is Hotmail type account(live.com, hotmail.com, msn.com =
etc) the full username@domain.com is required(e.g.=20
johndoe@live.com)
For Hotmail type accounts...settings can be found here applicable to =
iPhone and iPod Touch
Hotmail and MSN Accounts POP3/SMTP Access
