I can go for days or weeks with no problem, then all of a sudden I am
deleting emails and I get the message" AN UNKNOWN ERROR HAS OCCURRED" and I
have to wait a couple of hours or overnight before I can delete again- there
is no pattern or reason I can see- any body have any ideas what is going on?

hmm- a couple of more posts about this problem- we both seem to have the same
problem. The next time this happens I will try your suggestion- but it is
sporadic could be minutes, hours, days, weeks til it happens again. This
seems to be a temporary fix- is there a permanent one- and thanks- I will get
back to you when it happens and I am able to try your suggestion-

The permanent fix is to make sure your antivirus doesn't scan emails, or
else switch to one that is 100% compatible:
