MessageBeep() doesn't give a sound
My HP-Notebook( with W7 64-bit) all of a sudden (probably after
executing one of the "cleaners") stopped given a sound with the
MessageBeep() API. Also modal screens (e.g. messageboxes in Word) usually
give a sound when you click oiutside of the box. But not on my computer
anymore.
All other sounds are fine, e.g. log on/off, Media Player, etc.
I tried a lot of things (driver, sound configurations, etc.) w/o success.
On my wife's identical machine it works flawless.
Any idea, where to check or compare?

Windows 7 and Windows XP VM: disk drive issue
The problem: I've installed Win 7 pro (64 bit) and the Win XP virtual
machine (the one you have to download, not the "compatibility mode" included
with Win 7). The computer is an HP m9425f with three hard drives -- no idea
whether they are partitions of a single physical drive or separate. The
drives are, naturally, C, D, and E. The DVD drive is F.
The problem is that the Win XP VM can't see the D and E drives. It therefore
assigns letter D to the DVD -- and then complains because it can't find the
DVD drive. I've tried setting Win 7 to not tell the XP VM that hard drives D
and E eve

How can I remove a network connection/workgroup in Win 7?
Hi,
I have recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and
McAfee antivirus. After I connected the laptop to the local network (don't
remember if I created a network connection in Win 7 in the laptop or .), the
desktop running Win XP Pro, SP 3 lost access to the workgroup (doesn't find
even itself on the workgroup/LAN, while Internet works fine).
After some struggle I found that McAfee has a feature that excludes PC:s not
having McAfee installed on them! Now to my question:
Can McAfee really change settings on other PC:s (?), so that the desktop

pagefile necessary?
Hi
I wasn't sure where to post this question, so decided to post it in this
section.
I am running W2k8 x64 on a server with 16GB RAM and virtual memory is
initially set as 'System managed', which causes a pagefile of 16.3GB to be
created.
As the server is short on disk space and could use this 16.3GB very nicely,
my question is:
Assuming server load never exceeds the amount of RAM available, is the
pagefile necessary?
Would it be better to disable the pagefile completely, or to use a custom
size like 800MB(Min) to 2048MB (Max) ?
I have scoured the Internet for info

Windows 7 tray manager program list
Hi,
Does anyone know how to remove a program from the tray manager's
icon/notification customization list?
The list shows applications that have been completely uninstalled - I
have verified that the program directories and registry entries for
them are gone - so there is no possibility that an icon or
notification will appear, but the tray manager doesn't seem to be
coordinated with the installed program list.

Windows 7 Screen Resolution Issue
Windows 7 power saving feature puts the system to sleep after a certain
period of idleness. This is fine, but in doing so it also seems to reset my
screen resolution from the recommended 1980 x 1080 to a much lower
resolution resulting in much larger icons, type, etc. I can easily re-set
the resolution, but it doesn't seem like I should have to. Is there a way
to prevent this change? I've only had my new Windows 7 machine for a week
or so, but this has happened on several occasions.

Hi Folks,
My machine is unable to hibernate: when I try, it cranks the HDD for
10-15 seconds, beeps, and then brings me to the login screen (it's as if
i've just locked my screen).
If I assign a drive letter to the win 7 hidden partition, hibernation
works again. I can un-assign the drive letter in the same session, and

32 bit version of MSIE 8 is corrupted
I'm running 64bit WIN 7 and I believe that my 32bit version of MSIE 8 has
been corrupted. My 64bit version of MSIE 8 is fine. How can I delete and
replace my 32bit version of MSIE 8?

microsoft Office Newsgroups?
Does anyone know whether Microsoft will continue to have
newsgroups for Office 2010?
My news server, news.individual.net doesn't seem to be
showing any microsoft.public.office2010 of any of the programs.
Are they available on a different server?
Thanks.
Louise
