Hi,

Could someone advice a beginner newsgroup user how to read and post to this
and other microsoft.public.newsgroups after MS pulls the plug on their
own server? What should I use instead of "msnews.microsoft.com"?
I would prefer to keep reading newsgroups, than some webforum infested
with loads of advertisements and "eye candy".

Use one of these. However, they do not carry all the Microsoft Public News
groups.

You don't/can't to the groups on THIS server > Microsoft. You MAY still
be able to access the supposed group on services that do not honor the
Internet standards and requirements, however you will NOT be posting to
or on Microsoft, and any information/posts will likely be from the least
informed, most prone to error individuals the planet has to offer
regardless of who they might represent themselves as. And without
Microsoft's "newsgroups" Usenet users will have no ready information to
steal and post as if it is their own, hence the level of supposed
competence will be slim, likely of the type and quality found on "urban
myth" espousing sites, or the "tin foil hat" and similar.

So instead of moving to one of the forums offering further support from
which you can "strip" flash, ads, and other you may not want rather
easily or using RSS feeds or other offerings, you intend to subject
yourself to the mindless ramblings of those who generally need their
medications modified or are suffering from psychotic attacks..
Basis? Just look at a large percentage of Usenets offerings; or at the
alt offerings for the things you think you want or interest you.

 Good luck.

I'm sorry, but when you post such utter garbage as that, it must be
countered with actual, rational facts, lest others think it's the truth.

The microsoft.public hirearchy is not a hierarchy that's controlled or
governed by the standards (or the cabal) of the Big 7. As such, there
is no standard way or accepted policy for the carriage of the
microsoft.public hierarchy and even less coordination for the systematic
removal of these groups (because it simply was never done before -
certainly not by Microsoft itself).

Microsoft's desire for these groups to exist on usenet is rooted in it's
decision back in 1996 to peer itself and it's servers with usenet. Who
issued the original group-create messages at the time is (to me) not
known.

Once created, these groups can not be removed - at least not in any
complete or coordinated way, and also because there is no single
authoritative body that is in a position to create a policy to deem that
they *should* be removed. Not even Microsoft itself is or can be in
this position.

What we will see are attempts by those that are hostile to Microsoft
where they will generate supposed lists of "current" or "default" usenet
newsgroups where the microsoft.public groups will be erased from those
lists, and there will no doubt be some servers that follow these lists
and will remove those groups from their servers. There will also be
check-group or rm-group messages that will be sent out by some of these
people (Julien LIE for one) but for the most part those will be ignored
(no self-respecting NNTP operator honors external RM-group messages).
Microsoft itself has never, and in this case will most likely not send
any such messages itself.

As for what sort of postings will be made to this and other microsoft
groups once this D-day comes, there is no basis to speculate that they
would be any different than what occurs presently.

MEB can choose to not point his news reader (assuming he uses a news
reader) to another server that carries this group (such as aioe,
eternal-september, etc) but he can't claim that he can't participate
simply because Microsoft no longer carries the group (but I for one
hopes he doesn't). The signal to noise ratio of this group will improve
dramatically once he's gone.

MEB is again predicting that these groups will not exist on usenet after
D-Day, and further claiming that some sort of "stealing" is currently
happening (something he has never claimed before, and for which he will
not provide any examples of).

 Microsoft "governs" what it owns.

The "Web" is governed by its controlling bodies.

Usenet is governed by the regulations and other that apply to it.

And this group will die because IF it continues anywhere, it will fill
with parties such as yourself...

Oh cool, that ISN'T what I said nor what you quoted, did you forget to
delete it for modify the contents as usual. The groups may continue but
will fill with all those messages and users who never made ON TO
Microsoft's servers; all the flames, cussing, and all the filtered [some
which Microsoft let through these last few months just to see what WAS
going on].

Nor is what I have previously shown right here in this group regarding
you and some of your postings and where those actually came from.

Now here's a bit of reality.

I warned Usenet generally about *you* and your postings.

I warned about what parties such as yourself TRY to succeed in doing,
taking over newsgroups and/or killing them.

If anyone wants to cast blame for the closure of this server and
service, its because of you and your like; the thieves, the pirates, the
trolls, and people who can not control themselves and act like adults.
That's *you* 98-Virus-XP-whatever Guy. You have a feather for your cap
but you have one less place to spread your trash...

And here's what I posted to you on 04/17/2010 in the
Re: upgrade from win98 to winxp?
where you again suggested pirated Microsoft software links and even
suggested stealing a friend's Key for activation.

"Remember YOU determined how this proceeds..."

Are you aware that MVPs post to other groups not carried by Microsoft
"server" ?
Check out alt.windows7 for a start.
