Happy New Year everyone!
Can Firefox be used on Windows 98SE? Which version? One reason, I am asking
is because I have been having trouble accessing my yahoo mail with the old
IE version 6. The computer keeps freezing up when I try. I Keep getting the
message that Yahoo mail is (not Responding), Will I have better luck with
Firefox? Do I have to do anything with IE?

yes you can. I use v2.0.0.20 and an addon called Webmail Notifier v1.5.5 to
check web mail. Works great!

Hopefully you will have better luck with FF. It works MUCH better than IE6
for me. IE6 with all the flash, java etc.etc.etc now is just horrible. I do
a lot on ebay in W98 and if I have an insane moment and launch IE instead of
FF boy do I regret it. FF simply works! There is one thing though which
drives me nuts, its common to all v2 editions, that is it boots s-l-o-w .
Once it is loaded up all is well. And actually there is a utility which will
load certain FF DLL's at Windows startup thus causing FF to load quickly
when you launch it. I don't use the program because the system here only has
384MB memory and I don't want unnecessary DLLs loaded. Give FF a try. If you
don't like it just uninstall!

I would add that you should also consider that a couple additional FF
plug-ins [regardless of FF version] should be added :
*No Script*, which shuts off site scripting by default and you then
allow such on a per site basis - temporarily [preferred] or permanently
[trusted sites ONLY] {make sure to configure it to NOT allow the
advertising from the No Script site and check the other defaults via the
settings, particularly the *white-listed* sites};
*AdBlock Plus*, which can be used to strip site advertising and other
blockages [like a backup site *junk* stripper used in conjunction with
No Script].
Remember though that FF 2.0.0.20 was the last version for 9X, and
shortly [almost immediately] after release, it was shown as having
severe vulnerabilities [some of which can be mitigated via No Script,
though once a site is allowed, all bets are off]; a couple which could
be considered as browser killers [depending upon your usage]
particularly as these vulnerabilities have been shown as used in the
wild and can come into play during the initial negotiations between the
browser and site, and before the plug-ins can be effectively used.
Opera 10 supposedly still works in 9X and is still being worked
on/programmed for, though some systems may have issues. The older 9+
version was programmed for 9X support and doesn't contain the same
severe vulnerabilities that FF2 does [though it does have a few issues].

But don't make it the default browser until/unless you decide to keep it.

You can use TurnFlash (from Nirsoft) to disable flash so that's not an
issue. For the other stuff there are ad blocking programs available.

This is one of my main complaints about FF.. It takes too long to load -
but that's probably even worse since I'm on dial-up. Plus, I just like IE6
better, anyways!!
(However, some sites have proven a bit problematic with IE6, but
fortunately, only a few so far). I tried IE7 and IE8 - thanks, but no
thanks (until I *have* to)

It would be interesting to know if anyone else has that same problem (with
IE6). Since I don't use Yahoo mail I can't comment. I can say that a few
sites seem to be a bit problematic with IE6, but so far, not enough to get
me to switch to IE7 or IE8 (thanks, but no thanks). Not sure if you can
use those with Win98SE, however (I'm using WinXP most of the time now :-).
> Will I have better luck with Firefox?
My bet is you will. But FF (at least for me) takes too long to load (but
I'm also on dial-up), and I just don't like it as much as IE6!! Plus,
having the integration of IE and OE together - is nice.

Probably. I do find that:
(a) (new!) yahoo mail doesn't go with 98SE; and
(b) Yahoo mail clearly has some scripts running that cause it to be
absolutely glacial before it *finally* finishes loading the initial
page.
>Do I have to do anything with IE?
"have to"? Nope. But if you try FF and decide to stay with it as
your preferred browser, then set is as the default. Only if
IE-paranoia sets in should you bother trying to defuse IE. It can't
hurt you if it doesn't run.

Hi Bill.
I understand that IE6 is the last one that is compatible with Windows 98SE.
I know IE8 will not work with 98SE. I don't think that IE7 works with 98SE.
I have been using a work around with Yahoo mail for about a week. Today I
did not have to use the work around. I hope it stays that way.

I am using the old classic yahoo mail, soon will have it emptied. I am
forwarding the mail I want to keep to my SBC account. Quite a job. It has to
be forwarded by hand. I have quite a few folders I need to go through.

Yeah, ok, and that may be the case. Perhaps someone else knows for sure

But I didn't like IE7 (or IE8) very much; I much prefer IE6 (even though

IE7 was designed by Micro$haft to NOT install on windows 2000 - so no,
it won't run on win-98.
(there are ways to get it to run on win-2k, but it's not easy from what
I've heard).
Also note that there was the original IE6, there was IE6-SP1, and
IE6-SV1 (more commonly known as IE6-XP2).
IE6-XP2 shipped with XP-SP2 (Aug 2004) and IS NOT compatible with Win-98
*OR* Win-2000.
Recent web-metrics measurements indicates that 0.1% of PC's connected to
the net that do some web-browsing are running win-98, and this number is
dropping by 0.005% per month. Also indicated is that for every win-98
system running FireFox, 5 or 6 win-98 systems are running IE6 as their
primary browser.
IE6 has been a crappy browser for at least the past 3 years, with
Firefox being a more suitable / superior choice for win-98 and win-2K.
Most win-98 users seem not to understand that or be "savvy" enough to
change.
It is possible, using KernelEx, to install and run Firefox 3.x on win-98
systems.

Bill,
This has happened before. I think it is a problem with Yahoo Classic. They
want you to update the IE6 to IE 8. Also, SBC wanted me to update the
alternate email addresses. I did that, and now it works? Just a fluke? Maybe
yes, maybe no. So not taking any chances. I am getting all the mail out of
the Yahoo Classic while I can. They won't forward the mail, you have to do
each one manually. Not getting much done otherwise.
Also, is Netscape still available? I am looking for the best browser and one
that does not take a lot of know-how to use.I do not want to download a lot
of stuff to be able to use it.Do you know a simple browser I can use?
Thanks,
Angel

I found Netscape version 9, but don't know if it works with Win98SE (haven't
checked that).

There are several alternatives out there, but I'm not sure how many are
compatible with Win98SE - you'd have to check that. Some of them are based
on the IE engine (GreenBrowser, SlimBrowser, etc), so they may or may not
solve your problem. In contrast, FireFox, Netscape, and Orca, for example,
are NOT based on the IE engine.
Why not check out the download.com site, or the fileforum.betanews.com site,
and you can get some ideas (look for the browser software section).

I installed Flock, but never got around to using it. It seemed like
it was designed especially for song-"sharing" or something i don't do,
but maybe that is what they push because no one else does that, and
myabe it's as good as or better than every other browser function as
anything is.

FF 2 is better than IE6 because it has tabs. With one gig of Ram
I've opened 20 tabs at once, as well as Agent and Eudora**IE didn't
get them until 7 or 8 (and I still don't like the way IE displays
things even in 8.)
Also Youtube has been warning me that it won't play on IE6 soon. Now
for the last 6 months I couldn't play videos on FF either, but I think
I broke something. I think it should be still working.
**Although in fairness I should say that on the same hardware, in XP
I've opened 60 tabs and Eudora and Agent. In 98SE when I open too
many tabs, the typeface switches to bold and then to Hebrew (no
kidding), so I know I have to close Eudora or end some tabs, or it
will freeze but in XP even 70 tabs hasn't shown any indication of
failure.

Thanks. I will get that.
BTW, I was using win98SE exclusively from July until the 2nd week in
December, when I finally fixed XP. (I didn't work on it all that time,
only about 2 weeks.)
>allow such on a per site basis - temporarily [preferred] or permanently

Another great add-on is Stylish, which allows one to change the
appearance of the page on the monitor. But I only use it for one
purpose, for the style "Mark visited links as read on unruly
domains". I believe I *chose* red, but I can't figure out where I
chose it. It's mostly for google, which normally displays UNread urls
as some shade of blue and read urls as violet, or vice versa. I can't
tell the difference, and I'm not the only one. The style description
actually mentions that it works on google search.
An interesting thing, when I was having trouble with XP, which I
thought might be related to Stylish, in uninstalled Stylish and later
when I put it back, it still had that style attached to it.
Also great is pdf-download by Nitro, which gives one a several choices
of what to do with a pdf link.
Also Image Zoom is great, it enlarges graphics, and sometimes enables
me to read print that I couldn't read before, even with glasses and a
magnifying glass. I don't think IE6 has anything that does this, and
I'm not sure IE7 or 8 do either.
Cntl + and - do the same thing with text, with no add-on needed.
Cntl-0 puts it back where it started. Also cntl-mouse-scroll-wheel
will do this.
While we're at it, in FF3, which won't run on 98, for some weird
reason they got rid of Unsorted Bookmarks from the Bookmarks dropdown,
and it only shows in Organize Bookmarks, but there's an add-on to put
it back called Unsorted Bookmarks Folder Menu.

Do you have to do this because classic isn't supported on Win98, or do
all Yahoo mail users have to do this?

Or you can use some alternative shell browsers for IE6, like GreenBrowser,
or SlimBrowser, etc, that use the IE engine, but have tabs, too.
> Also Youtube has been warning me that it won't play on IE6 soon.
Is that the notice that says it's going to be phasing out support for IE6?
I've seen that for some time now. Wonder how long before they really
enforce it, however.

Um - no. That statement is a joke and a farce. Was it intended to be?
IE6 is universally derided as a very bad web browser by web designers
Many people want to see the end of IE6 usage on the net. It's a pain in
the ass to continually write web-code that takes into account IE6's
idiosyncracies so that pages are rendered as intended.

The former. After repeated badgering to "try the new Yahoo! Mail" I
eventually relented, only to be told "you need to upgrade your O/S".
That isn't about to happen any time soon.

Just remember that each tab remains connected to that site AND if you
have used a secured site [until you actually log-out from it], which
also remains potentially usable [cross-site] and until the browser is
shutdown/restarted.

Okay, and another would be the unmht for the old MS mthm saving and
reading format. But then you can install dozens of add ins, each with
its supporters, though I'm not sure why anyone would use most of them ..,

FF3 can be run in 98, but NOT without modifying the OS, bringing all
potential issues associated with that modification and other variables.

Did I say it was the only reason FF2 was better? No. You look silly
criticizing a true statement, just because it didn't make some point
you want to make. You could have made your point while ignoring my

Well I guess I knew that, but I certainly hadn't thought about it.
Are you saying there is some security risk?

Sounds like more trouble than it's worth. FF3 or 3.5 may be better,
but I don't have any real problem with FF2. Except sometimes scripts
time out (which I think would not in FF3), and take the focus from
other tabs. But someone in this thread told us about Noscript.

Your statement is like saying that a Cadillac SRX is better than a Ford
Model T because the Cadillac has cup-holders. Do you see how stupid
such a statement is?

Was it supposed to be the most important reason? If not, why did you
state _that_ reason?

Your statement was inconsequential. It was a stupid thing to say, even
if it's true.

My point was that your point was stupid.

That's because you're ignorant and uninformed. If you want to make a
statement like FF is better than IE6, then why don't you learn about the
real, substantial, underlying differences between them so you can make
more meaningful and useful statements?

Uh yeah. The keys to the doors of the sites visited and your system are
literally in the locks when using tabbed connections.
*XSS*, sometimes referred to as CSS {not the web page design activity
CSS} though web page CSS can be used to inject or exploit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting
which can employ cached materials access, and can be initiated
immediately upon server access [prior to actual page load] during
initial negotiations.
*CSRF/XSRF* - Cross-site request forgery
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_request_forgery
http://www.google.com/search?&q=XSRF+vulnerability&btnG=Search
potentially worse
*JAVA and JAR* vulnerabilities and standard controls can be used
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=JAR+vulnerability&btnG=Search
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=JAVA+exploits&btnG=Search
is there anyone who still doesn't understand the problems with JAVA and
its abilities.
*SSL* exploits
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=SSL+exploits&btnG=Search
enough vulnerabilities and exploits STILL exist that one should NEVER
use the same browser incident for any other usage.
*FLASH* exploits
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=FLASH+exploits&btnG=Search
okay, so MAYBE you missed the little games that use it AND some of
which have used the exploitable coding environment, but how could you
miss the rest of the exploits, they are plastered almost everywhere...
*ShockWave* exploits
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Shockwave+exploits&btnG=Search
ditto
*Browser cache* exploits
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=browser+cache+exploits&btnG=Search
often over-looked, and even by those who THINK that a clean-up at
browser shutdown or some other time is sufficient,,, nono, not good
enough...
Not in the same vein as the above, but definitely for consideration:
*Super cookies*
http://lifehacker.com/5245418/betterprivacy-prevents-tracking-by-flash-other-super+cookies
http://www.computerbytesman.com/privacy/supercookie.htm
http://www.fightidentitytheft.com/blog/new-breed-super-cookie-defies-removal-almost
http://www.tamingthebeast.net/blog/web-marketing/super-cookies-overstepping-boundaries.htm

http://forums.comodo.com/anti-virusmalware-productsother-security-products/automatically-blockdelete-super-cookies-t39123.0.html;msg354093
READ all of this one. Note the Jan 1, 2010 crystalpcservice post,
though this party fails to address the other activities obviously occurring.
And of course there are other http/https header inclusions and exploits
which you and whatever browser, *never* see [SSI].
*SEE* PHP, perl, server side JAVA, ruby, etc..
I'm *NOT* trying to scare anyone, but one should make an effort to at
least realize and minimally understand the *what and how* of the issues;
and that these things ARE occurring and being used out here.
So the short: NEVER connect to an SSL or secured site and ANY OTHER
site or service at the same time; and shut down/restart the browser
before further usage, hopefully letting something clean up the cache and
other accumulated materials/data.
And limit the number of opened tabs;
Just how many are you actually going to use/access again. If you have
60 web places you post in and/or monitor, then you might want to think
about how you're spending your life...

I did, however, No Script isn't going to help in many situations such
as initial negotiations wherein the *browser coding* flaws and
vulnerabilities first come into play [initial negotiations]; and the
stealing focus issue IS something to be concerned about. It should have
caused you to at least think about WHY and HOW this can occur, and what
else CAN be done via the various scripting and code environments being used.

No, it's not stupid at all. Not if cup-holders matter to someone.
You brought up cup-holders but coincidentally, my previous car had cup
holders, and I bought the same model made 5 years later, assuming it
would have everything good that the previous car did. Well, it had no
cupholders and it took me three years to design, build, and install
what I consider a good one. My passenger still doesn't have one, but
he can hold his drink in his lap.

No. I never said that and I didn't mean that. I never said it was the
most important reason. I said I barely use the program and I don't

Well if it was true, you shouldn't have followed it with "Um - no."
And your criticism of what really is a disability of IE6 was
inconsequential.

You think I should waste my time learning what other people don't like
about a program I already don't like?

I said it was better because it had tabs. In one sentence. Anyone
who can read can decide if that is something that makes it better for
him.
I don't call myself "IE Guy". I don't claim to be very involved in IE.
You're the only one who is confused.

I have other things to do. Most of the post was about good add=ons
for Firefox. You're all wrapped up about 9 words.

Okay, don't get "lost" in all the issues, just remember they are out
here and being used almost everywhere; like on FaceBook, U-Tube,
Flicker, you name it just about everywhere now... then you have the

I basically never did use IE, started with Netscape and through
different Firefox versions for years. Firefox 2.0.20 is the last
version that runs in W98SE, it can come in a portable version and I've
used it for IIRC as long as it's been out. I use only 3 extensions,
Prefbar, Noscript and AdBlock. I normally browse with javascript,
images and cookies disabled. In my browsing patterns, it never gives
me problems - except a few web pages don't work due to coding. Moz
Backup saves bookmarks. I never go to Yahoo anything, because they
require everything enabled.

In W2K, Fx 2.0.0.20 loads in 1 second. In W98, it takes 2 to a max 3
seconds in a 600 MHZ machine. This is with my 3 extensions, extensions
can slow you down.
If Angel choses Fx 2, realize that web pages keep changing, and in my
case, maybe 1 out of 30 sites, the page opens, but I can't do
anything. With different browsing habits, it may be worse for you.
I looked once at Opera years ago and didn't like the GUI.

Look at Opera 10.10 just one time
and you see a new Word open up eyes ;-)
If you do not like it just Uninstall it!!
YOU You Will need to Copy all of your Firefox Pug-ins to Opera Pug-ins
folder
so you will not need to be Downloads Pug-ins all day when you already have
them!
Need do not get me wrong I have Firefox Too!
a webmaster like me have all the Browsers to check are WebPages!
And you can make Opera Identify >>> Firefox >>> IE >>> NS >>>
so that webmasters will see Identify Firefox and not Opera
and they will believe that Firefox is one view there WebPages
But you know it was you Opera !!!
