Hello:
The following is the response I received from ALWIL Software when I inquired
about the end of support for avast! v4.8 and the end of support for Windows
98/ME. I'm not completely clear of the statement that support for Windows
98/ME ended at the end of 2009, but that definition updates will be provide

program files will not be updated, but that definition update file that will
work with Windows 98/ME will be supplied until the end of 2010?

Printers absent from Device Manager
This Win98SE PC has two printers:
Brother Laser connected LPT (default) -- no problems
Brother Inkjet (multifunction) connected USB(v.2) -- too slow.
I suspect the Inkjet prints slowly because of standard

As many as 10 drivers were associated with this printer,

[OT] Another "niggle" vanquished
No reply is needed to this. It is just a partial followup to
the long thread I started, "WinZip 8.0 running v. slowly". In
that thread, I mentioned a large number of "niggles" which had
developed, over a long period (but especially in the last few
months), in my Win98SE installation (dating from January 2007).
The one I most urgently needed to deal with was the very slow
running of WinZip 8.0, and that seems to have been sorted out
(although further tests must be made) by uninstalling it, and
replacing it with WinZip 9.0 SR1 (as someone here suggested).

As far as I can tell from doing a few experiments with 7-Zip,
reading the documentation that comes with it, and browsing a

is essential for saving and restoring complex structures of

Is there a Quicktime that works on Win98?
I went to a website that said you have to download some plug-in to
view this video.
Ok, I went to the website and it came up with 'free' Quicktime for
WinXP, Vista, and Windows 7.
I'll bet it's over 3 times the size of Quciktime that ran on Win98
[and I'll bet it crashes Win98], so where can I find Quicktime that
runs on Win98?

I find the current jokes and general discussion of his "status"

you should drop the subject. I for one find these posts in

Missing System Tools folder
I wanted to run System File Checker, read that it is in System Tools.
I just looked in Accessories, there is no System Tools folder! ??
I just used Scanreg/restore, the oldest registry is only a few days
old. And nothing has happened on this machine in the past week, so I
believe the Tools folder has gone missing some time ago.
The machine runs fine, so I want to fix this without reformat, etc.
How to restore the System Tools folder?

Can hardware, like a mobo, interfere with win98SE?
Can hardware, like a mobo, interfere with win98SE?
When looking at some motherboards and downloading manuals and software
related to them, at the ASUS site, for example, I noticed that in the
process of finding the files, the computer asked me what operating
system I had, and provided a list of OSes.
In one case win98 was listed, and in another, it wasn't. Only XP was
(and some others)
Does this mean that the mobo won't work with win98SE?
I asked some people and was told that the problem is getting drivers.
Does that mean drivers for onboard hardware that used to me adde

faster FF2 replacement
There's been some chatter over the last few weeks regarding Firefox 2.0.0.20
(last FF for W98). Came across a faster replacement! It utilizes your
current profile, extensions etc. You can read about it here, including MUST
HAVE hardware requirements (otherwise it won't run):
http://www.palemoon.org/
Been using it for less than a week. Have seen faster speeds in some things,
albeit the improvement is small. Perhaps that's because FF here is HIGHLY
optimized already.
Check it out. You'll likely have to contact the author for a D/L link. It's
easy to install / uninstall. For m

Norton SystemWorks 2002 is available here
The Norton SystemWorks 2002 CD can be downloaded from these links:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/19/2010382/NSW02-A.ZIP
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/19/2010382/NSW02-B.ZIP
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/19/2010382/NSW02-C.ZIP
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/19/2010382/NSW02-D.ZIP
The password to unzip each of them is "a". Each file is close to 50 mb
in size.
When unzipped, you'll get
NSW02-1.piz
NSW02-2.piz
NSW02-3.piz
NSW02-4.piz
Rename them each to .zip. They are not password protected.

USB Flash Drive Limitation
Hi,
If you use a USB flash drive ("thumb drive") and you can't copy
another file to that drive, with an error message such as "access denied"
or "unable to create...", it is possible you may have used up the space
available, used for the names of files and folders/directories in the "root"
folder/directory.
To "fix" this, move (copy then delete) some files to the hard drive.
Then create a folder(s) at the root directory. Afterwards, copy files into
a folder.
The "root" directory has a limit to the number of entries (filenames and
folder names) it can accommodate.

If you want Norton Utilities 2002, here it is
Ok, I've zipped up the entire NU directory on the NSW 2002 CD. It can
be downloaded from here:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/19/2010382/norton.zip
When you unzip that file, you'll get this:
NU.piz
Rename that to nu.zip and unzip it. That will give you the entire NU
directory. Run setup.exe to install Norton Utilities 2002.
The password to unzip both the above zip files is "a" (no quotes).
That should give you a working copy of Norton Speed disk (and a lot
more).

Defrag problems
I tried to defrag HD from MS DOS, I restarted PC into a MS-DOS prompt, typed
defrag c: /f /sd- /skiphigh
but got message saying that "this program requires microsoft windows"..
So defrag utility does not work from DOS. Defragging from Windows does
work, since it constantly restarts and says "drive's content changed:
restarting", then tried defrag from Safe mode (from Run command prompt) but
had the same issue "drive's content changed: restarting", just less
frequently. Finally I tried "Selective startup" in Msconfig, unchecked all
boxes, restarted into Safe mode, then run comma

Can Firefox be used on Windows 98SE?
Happy New Year everyone!
Can Firefox be used on Windows 98SE? Which version? One reason, I am asking
is because I have been having trouble accessing my yahoo mail with the old
IE version 6. The computer keeps freezing up when I try. I Keep getting the
message that Yahoo mail is (not Responding), Will I have better luck with
Firefox? Do I have to do anything with IE?
