Creating new Excel spreadsheet in WSS

  • Follow

Hi-
Under the Share Docs section, you are able to Create a new Word doc - Is
there a way to also create New Excel spreadsheets from inside SharePoint. I
thought I had read that, but now can not find instructions for how to set it
up. ANY help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly
appreciated!

thanks!!!! - Cindy

There are several different solutions, depending on what you actually wish
to achieve. The type of document that is created when you click the New
button is dependant on the template associated with that library. By default
this is, as you noted, the Word template. You can change this to another
file format by going into the Library Settings > Advanced Settings and
changing the Document template to say, an .xslx file. If you want to be able
to create new Word or Excel files in the same library, then you will need to
set the library to Allow management of content types and add a new content
that uses the different file types as their templates.

You can do that by following below two steps

Step1

Go to the Site Actions > Site Settings
Under Galleries > Site Content Types
Create [To create a new Content type]
Give the information as required in the New Site Content Type page
You can have "Document Content Types" selected under "Select parent
content type from:"
Select "Document" under "Parent Content Type:"
Under "Put this site content type into:" select "Document Content Types"
Click OK
This will take you to newly created content type page
Here click on 'Advanced Settings'
Select under 'Document Template' under 'Upload a new document template:'
Browse to a blank Excel sheet file and hit OK

Step 2

Now go to the Document library settings
Go to Advanced Settings
Select Yes under "Allow management of content types?" in Content Types and
hit OK
Now you can see the Content Types listed in the Settings page
Click "Add from existing site content types"
Select "Dcoument Content Types" under "Select site content types from:"
Select the content that you created from the list under "Available Site
Content Types:" and ADD
Click OK

Hope these steps helps you to create what you were looking for.
