Revoke SQL "securityadmin" role after installation
My DBA have a concern about providing "securityadmin" SQL role to any
account. He says he is okay with assigning this role during install but
would like to revoke it once installation is complete.
Wold there be an issue with removing this privilege? Specifically my
question is related to the ability to run STSADM and PCCOnfig commands.
Thank you for your help.

Setup stopped working
My first attempt to install MOSS 2007 on a WIN 2008 VM (Hyper V) stalled
because WIN 2008 requires a service pack (MOSS 2007 SP1). But I could not
install the service pack until I had installed MOSS 2007, or so I thought
until I read the following blog:
http://edge.technet.com/Media/Installing-MOSS-2007-on-Windows-Server-2008/
I followed the instructions here - essentially, extract the MOSS 2007 SP1
and WSS 3.0 SP1 fies to C:\...\X86\Updates folder of the installation media
and then run setup. This allowed the install to continue past the point
where it had stalled previously

I have a new MOSS 2007 server up and running. I've created the first site.
Users going to the site from a PC have no trouble with permissions to the
site. Users comming from a Windows 2003 terminal server recieve a logon

the SharePoint site be different between a PC and a Terminal Server? Why
aren't the user credentials being passed to the SharePoint site when coming

SharePoint Slow To Delete List Items
I've got a feeling the answer to this question isn't a simple one.
I'm using a delete query within an Access 2007 database to delete SharePoint
list items. The delete query uses a sub query to determine the IDs of the
list items to delete. This delete query runs very slow. For example, it
took 53 minutes to delete 34 rows today.
What can I do to speed this up?
Here's a brief overview of our process -
1 - Records in SP list older than 14 days are added to a SQL archive table
(via Access append query). These archived records include the ID.
2 - All SP list records tha

Alternate Access Mappings Questions
Sharepoint will be used by internal and external users. Internal just go to

Searching for non-painful techniques to copy SharePoint sites from one server to another
We have some developers who are working in a 3 tiered development
process - Dev, QA, and finally Production. They are developing MOSS
2007 sites, using SharePoint standard features, SharePoint Designer,
InfoPath, etc.
They are doing quite a bit of changes to the standard master page
layouts, adding web parts, linking to lists, etc.
In the past, we've seen a lot of pain occur when it is time to move
one of the sites from the dev machine to the qa machine. However, when
we export the site from dev, then import the site into QA, the
resulting site has lots of problems due to the former

Hi,
We have MOSS 2007 installed on a Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition and

Our users suddenlly started to get the HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden.
The problems appeared after 3 Windows Server 2008 hot fixes applied. I

Tried to reinstall .NET 2.0.
The error shows up even logging with a domain admin account.
On Event Viewer, I found the Event Code: 4011 error on application log:

Question about SharePoint wiki - default.aspx vs home.aspx
I got an email message today asking why a wiki I created last August
has a page out of date. The person said when they went to the wiki, it
displayed a page Home.aspx which didn't have a particular link, but
when they used the Quick Launch link to the wiki, they arrived at a
Default.aspx page that did contain a particular hyperlink.
I don't know how the Default.aspx page was created - when I create a
brand new wiki, I only see the Home.aspx page and the page on how to
use a wiki.
Some action taken by the owner or users of the wiki has resulted in a
Default.aspx page being created

is it possible to run mysites in a different web application

And each web application also uses its own Application Pool.
Our mysite is running in its own Web application using for example port 2000

but please proof me wrong if I misunderstood here something) and should be
accessed like the default site.
Btw, our SharePoint is published over ISA 2006.

OK so I have successfully published my Sharepoint site using ISA Server 2006.

Raw HTML appearing in items e-mailed to a discussion list
Over the last week or so, all of the helpdesk issues that are e-mailed to our

I'm struggling to get my head around this one.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
I can't guarantee that it's not linked to a change made by us but I can't

Is there a "best practice" for establishing isolated development, quality assurance, and production SharePoint instances?
I'm attempting to understand how a successful site handles development

What I mean is this - one could have one sharepoint instance, and use

approach is that if the site being developed happens to have need of
lists, workflows, etc. that are in use in production, then there is
the potential for test data to show up in production. And of course,
there is also the hassles that arise if you have to

Restore Sharepoint Site with spaces in url
I have a WSS3 site thats called /sites/Engineering Services (AWC-USB). I am
moving this site from one farm to another and wish to keep the original url.
I backed up the site with the stsadm -o backup command but cannot restore it
back to its original url as I get errors because of the spaces in the name.
I have replaced the spaces with _ underscores and this restores fine. I have
tried quotes around the name in multtiple places as well as replacing the
spaces with %20. None of this works. Is there a recommended syntax for
doing this that will allow the site to be restoed to

SharePoint Security Groups
Why when i create a top level site with then created 2 child sites does the
security from 1 child site carry over to the 2nd child site even though i
told each site to use unique permissions?
Ex: On child site 1 i create a group called SharePoint Guru and give it full
control on site 1. I then go over to Site 2 and look in it's permissions and
that group is listed there but the permissions on it says none. I don't
understand why it would carry over to site 2 like that. If I delete the
"SharePoint Guru" group from Site 2 it also deletes it in Site 1
I am running MOSS 2007

Web SSO with ADFS, using LDAP member & role providers in Sharepoin
Just read article at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262069.aspx
Section on "Web SSO and ADFS" describes how to register an <httpModule> for
ADFS, along with ADFS Membership and Role Providers.
This is close to what I think I want, but if you look at the section on
"LDAP" just above it, the article also shows how to install LDAP Membership
and Role Providers.
Here's the question. Is it possible to install (use) the ADFS HTTP Module
for web sso, and retain LDAP Membership and Role Providers. Put another
way, get the userID from the ADFS <httpModule> installed

access denied when searching with restricted read
Our users are getting an access denied message from the search results page
when they search. Our sharepoint install was setup have all authenticated
users have restricted read access to most sites. Users that have contribute
access can access the search page without issue, results are not always
displayed though. does anyone know if the restricted read permission is
locked out of search, or if it's possible to control the permissions to the
search page?

Attempting to resolve inconsistent error manifestation for a SharePoint 2007 custom list
Some co-workers have created a SP 2007 custom list, using a custom
master page to display 3 views of the data on one page.
The page displays as expected, but if someone attempts to select the
"edit list in datasheet view" one of 4 things happen. The weird thing
is that we've seen all 4 manifestations from the same page, same data,
for the same user using the same version of IE, Office, etc. on the
same day. And this has happened to several users, so it doesn't appear
to be profile related.
1. the initial manifestation was that IE 7 would appear to be running

Sharepoint 2.0 Access Request error
Out of the blue about 3 weeks ago my Sharepoint server on SBS 2003 started
throwing an Error page: Access denied. You do not have permission to perform
this action or access this resource. Access requests are not enabled.
I have searched for a solution and have tried the steps in KB 823278, as I
cannot access any pages with any user ID. The page
http://server/_layouts/1033/user.aspx, returns a page not found error. I am
totally stumped and have absolutely no idea where to go at this point. Can
any point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Greg

SSPAdmin, MySite and Intranet sites don't work - SharePoint 2007 I
Hi
I am new to Sharepoint and I got Sharepoint 2007 SP 2 installed on a Windows
Server 2008 R2. This is a single server farm and everything seemed to
install correctly. I created the SSPAdmin, MySite and Intranet through the
Central Administration page and also did the Shared Service Provider setup.
But when I try to go to those sites I get a page cannot be displayed. I
created a host header for each site in the DNS Management tool on the domain
controller. I then created the sites through Central Administration and set
each of them to port 80. But something must not be

12 hive log files, which ones are safe to periodically remove??
We back up all our 12 hive contents nightly.
The log files build up on the backup server though they are apparently
cleaned out on some schedule within the SharePoint WSS server itself.
Which log files are safe to regularly remove from the backup server??
All of them, what??
How much extra log files backup should we keep on the backup server??
Thank you...

MOSS 2007 & Databases!
Greetings,
We have recently upgraded our SQL server we use for MOSS.
I have successfully moved all content databases from one SQL server to
another.
Now I need to move all "admin" type databases as well:
1) AdminContent
2) Config
3) Search
4) SharedServices
Can I do this without a call to Microsoft? I looked for documentation, but
some of the comments do not flatter the content.
Is there an official "This is how we do it?"
Thank you,
Gregory

Annoying problem with lookup field

can't see the lookup field value, and if they try to edit the element,
the dropdown control used to choose a person from the first list
appears empty. Administrator don't have this problem.

Change default URL
Hi all,
during installation of MOSS 2007 we ended up with "http://server01" as a
default URL for the server farm. That was OK for testing purposes. Now, the
site went into production environment, and we want this URL to become
"http://server01.domain.com" for use on our internal network.
Since FQDN for this server IS really "server01.domain.com", it is accessible
through "http://server01.domain.com", but it 'switches' back to shorter URL
("http://server01") when you click certain links on the main page.
How do we always keep it as "http://server01.domain.com" ?
Thanks in

Confused about AAM, need two names for same site, help please
I've read about AAM, but almost everything totally focuses on using a
*.com domain etc.
I have an internal SharePoint intranet site only, named http://foo
I *also* want people typing http://bar to go automatically to http://foo
I would like people not to see http://bar in the address bar, only
http://foo
http://foo is the default and public site for SharePoint - 80, the
main site.
Do I add http://bar as an additional site name in the 'Public URLs'
section of the AAM collection for SharePoint - 80??
If so, do I put http://bar into 'Intranet' or 'Custom'??
How do I check
