I posted this thread to the microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices
group as well.
On our WSS 3.0 SP2 Web front end, the main web app w3wp process is consuming
100% CPU continuously. If I stop the windows sharepoint search service in
services.msc, the CPU usage drops dramatically.
Has anyone seen this? Is it a known issue? How do I troubleshoot this?
Thanks,
Jeff

you need check indexing interval.
wss 3.0 default crawling interval is every 5 minute.
so if you have many content and indexing can not complete in 5 minute. it`s
possible 100% CPU continuously.
you can change indexing interval on central admin page.
go to "central admin > operation > services on server > Windows SharePoint
Services Search > indexing schedule"
chage form every 5 minute to every day.
