sub tasks starting before their master task is set to start

  • Follow

So I have a master project with multiple sub projects. The sub projects
need to start at different dates. Rescheduling a sub project to a
different date, however, doesn't change its tasks to start on that date
(the constraint is set to 'start as early as possible' - but one would
think 'as early as possible' is when its master task starts, not when
the entire project starts). Rather, the tasks of the sub project with
the 'start as early as possible' constraint start at the entire project
start date.

The master task is just a rollup of the subtasks. It takes on the earliest
start of the subtask.

To move things forward, you need to move the subtask forward. You should
not be putting any constraints on a master task.

In a subproject setting, I would open each project, select Project Information,
and modify the Project Start Date there.

Hi Braden,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You didn't explain how you reschedule a subproject to start on a =
different date. What I recommend is to give every project a start =
milestone suitably linked to all the tasks that begin at its project =
start date. Then you can set the milestone to its new date and every =
task should then follow accordingly. If they don't follow, re-check =
that they are all set to be As Soon As Possible. Alternatively, you =
could run the Adjust Dates macro in the Analysis toolbar.=20

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be =
seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
