How can I prevent Project from starting a New file when starting?

99% of the time I open Project, I want to open an existing project, not start a new one. Because we're using project server, I don't even know where the files are, so I can't open them directly. I access them through File/Open/Retrieve from Project Server. So how can I prevent Project from starting a New file when starting (forcing me to close/discard changes everytime)?

finish date less holidays

I input holidays/sickenss etc into individual resource calendars for each resource. When I extend a resourced task into the holiday period of that resource the Finish date does not calculate the last day worked, but instead the last duration day. Is it possible to get this info? many thanks

I am a new project user and need to include employee vacation time in a project in such a way as to not impact the end time of any of my tasks. Instead I would like to have some indicator that certain tasks are under staffed at certain points in time. I am using Project 2003 and will be migrating to Project 2007 in a few weeks. Thanks

Importing .xml file into Microsoft Project 2007

I have a corrupted project file that I'm trying to fix. I read somewhere that if you save the project file as an .xml file, then re-open in project and save back to a .mpp file that it will fix the corruption. When I import the recently saved .xml file, I get several errors relating to the element of specific unique IDs. Once I get through all the errors, the project file opens. Capacity Line Missing in View Availability

We have an intermittent situation where we choose a resource in the Resource Center to view their assignments. When we use the view of Assignment Work by resource it shows, but if we change the view to the Assignment Work by project it does not show the red capacity line. I am trying to plan a project in MSP 2003 and I want all tasks to revolve around a milestone. This milestone has predessors and sucsessors. I want to drag the milestone to the left and right and have all connected tasks move with it keeping the same number of days between the tasks both in front and behind. i.e. the milestone has a task that has to happen 2 weeks before and some that have to happen 6 weeks. Custom Views (Project Professional 2007)

Hi, my company is using Project Professional and Project Server 2007. We have created two custom views in Project Professional and ever now and then the views some how get mixed up. For example, we've made Table A and Table B and put Table A in view A and Table B in view B. Some how Table B ends up being the view for View A instead of Table A. At first we thought maybe one of the PMs was accidently changing the view but it has also done it over night when no one had been working on it. Have you ever heard of such a glitch?

Import data from Excel with main tasks and subtasks

I'm new to MS Project and need help with importing data from Excel into Project 2000. The data consists of Work Request numbers, individual phase numbers for the Work Request, name of each phase, and (phase) start and end dates. I can open the Excel file in Project and map the fields, however, the data shows up as individual tasks. I need to have the Work Request number and project name be a main, or top-level, task, and the data related to the phases be sub-tasks. Here's an example of how the raw data appears in the Excel file: WorkReq# ProjectName Phase# PhaseName

Resource Type Cost: why its cost does not appear in actual cost?

Hello! 1. We have defined a resource type cost in the resource sheet 2. We have assigned its cost on a project task using Tools / Assign Resources 3. We started the project and at some point the project task containing this cost resource was completed. Problem: Although the task is completed, the cost of the resource type cost assigned to it does not appear in the actual cost. We are using MSP 2007. I am working with a number of very detailed schedules that have cross dependencies (represented as external dependencies) as well as a high level milestone schedule that brings all the other workstreams togther to provide a single view of the program. The milestone schedule is entirely driven by external dependencies from the respective schedules, however, I am experiencing some difficulties with MSP behaviour. 1. MS Project with small tasks and a full year to complete

I'm trying to add a project that includes 12 tasks that are not recurring, or at lest don't recur regularly, but will continue for one year. These all involve only a couple of days per month, or 8-36 days per year, but I want the project to show we have a full year to complete them. These are all independent tasks. Project Server 2007 and Updating Actual Work

Our current project server 2007 installation is configured for all time entry to come through the My Timesheet interface. Only resources can update actual work. We have run into many instances where time was entered incorrectly or not at all. With the project managers not having the ability to update actual work, this can create a great deal of overhead and incorrect project status reports. Excel Import goes thru without any data

Experts, I have been importing excel data to Project for years and never seen this problem. Today I was helping one of our users to import a list of assignments from Excel to a project schedule. We opened the excel file and went through the import wizard until we got to Finish. it went through but no data came in. I tried the same excel and same project files on my computer and everything worked fine. Need syntax help

I want to set up a filter that will search for tasks with specific names. For instance, I have a task called "Mail" in a bunch of different places through my project. I'd like to be able to filter on that task name. What would my syntax be for the "And/Or", "Field Name", "Value"? Please be specific. Resource Pool Sharer Files Management Improvement Suggestions

I'd like to recommend to Microsoft that they make the Sharing links to a resource pool in Project 2007 or 2010 easier to manage. For one, since many organizations have multiple directory structures on their network, an adjustable window size in the Share Resources window would enable users to see all of the file details they need. Another suggestion would be to enable sorting of the sharer files within the Share Resources window. Managing a large portfolio of sharer files would be much more efficient if one could more easily find the sharer file without having to scroll th
