How do I change the slide layout so the slides will be vertical like a letter 
sized paper instead of horizonal. 

Click on View, slide Master, Page Setup and select Page Setup or Slide 
Orientation and select Portrait.

Design tab / Page Setup group / Slide Orientation / Portrait
