I often print a hard copy of sent messages, but the file(s) attached to the
message to not appear in the printout. How can I have the icon for the
attached file(s) appear in the printed copy of the sent message???

Attachment icons will print only if the format is Rich Text.
To switch formats, open the message, Other actions > Edit message; Options
tab > Rich text
