You cannot selectively stop "Auto Updates" for IE" automatically.

Have you uninstalled the last "Auto Update" for IE or...?

Do you think there might be a way to resolve any such DEP issues without 
"stopping Auto Updates" for IE?

Cumulative Security Update sfor IE are usually released every two months so 
the next one is expected in April.  As it, too, will be a cumulative update 
(includes everything in all previous updates), are you planning on 
refraining from installing all further updates & leaving your system subject 
to all of the security vulnerabilities addressed by these updates?

If you want assistance with your problem, whatever it may be, please state 
your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2; Vista SP1; 
Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) as well as your IE version.

I've seen mention of my same problem in other forems,ng's but no resolution.

Is it likely that future MS I.IE. updates will resolve the problem? - I 
would expect MS to be aware of problem;I have sent many 'error reports'.

I have temporaily or permanently changed over to Firefox until such time I 
see info that suggests problem is resolved.

Running XP SP3 Build 2600;I.E.7 ver.7.05730.13 ( I recently removed 
I.E.8);but I'm now also dubious about I.E.7.

You should be more worried about your unpatched, vulnerable computer! 
(Remember the Google vs. China brou-ha-ha 2 weeks ago?  Well, KB978207 
addresses that security vulnerability!

It doesn't matter what browser you use, IE is part & parcel of Windows and 
must be kept fully-patched at all times.

Is KB978207 installed or not?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your 
subscription current?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? 
What third-party firewall (if any)?  Were any of these applications running 
in the background when you installed (and/or uninstalled) IE7, IE8, and/or 
SP3?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the 
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought 
it)?

I think my problem started when I updated with KB978207, which I removed 
when I removed IE8.

I have Norton Internet Security installed and fully uptodate with all its 
protection;I also get some protection from my ISP.

Always used N.I.S.

No, and CrystalBall� tells me that "the problem" was getting "Page cannot be 
displayed" errors after installing KB978207...

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer update from 
Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings [i.e., Norton Personal 
Firewall] don't help, try the following:

1. Disable all NIS components (i.e., anti-virus; anti-spyware, any Norton 
Add-ons; firewall) AND THEN enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., 
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus 
application has been re-enabled!  If you're running ZA Free firewall, you 
may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.

[If KB978207 is not installed, skip to Step #4 now!]

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 [or 8] 
(KB978207)" via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked 
at top right) and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Open Internet Explorer (only) to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | 
Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any Critical Security Updates offered 
(e.g., KB978207).  If a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional 
Software updates category on the left-hand side of the scan results window, 
install it to take full advantage of IE's enhanced security.

5. Reboot & make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and that the 
Windows Fireall is now disabled.
