I have never understood how this happens but I found one reason, and would
like to share. Does anyone out there know if this as a known bug?
I was doing some testing and had a batch called TEST with transactions, and
I wanted to delete the batch.
I opened Sales Batches and typed in my batch ID - I did not select it from
the lookup.
I did not select the batch type (Sales Transaction Entry), so with this
field blank, I clicked Delete and the window cleared.
I selected the batch from the lookup this time, and when I tried to delete
it, I got the error "This batch is beign edited by another user".
I changed the bchsttus in SY00500 and it was able to select and delete it.

I followed your steps but couldn't reproduce the error, it might be something
related to your installation or the version you are currently running, I did
the test on GP 10.0 SP4.

If you did not fill in the batch type field you did not select the original
batch and the system "thought" you were creating a new batch. When you hit
Delete, it Deleted your new batch only. It should not have affected the
existing batch with the type properly filled in.
