SCDPM 2010 RC non-transient Non-retryable error ID 30111

  • Follow

Hi,

I'm using SCDPM 2010 RC to backup a Hyper-V server.

SCDPM 2010 RC server - Windows 2008 R2
Hyper-V (VS01) server - Windows 2008 R2 DataCenter
Host1 - Windows 2008 Standard SP1
Host2 - Windows 2008 R2 Standard
Host3 - Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2

Host 2 and 3 are backing up fine.
Host1 is erroring with:

Type:	Recovery point
Status:	Failed
Description:	The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad
state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during
the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError:The writer experienced a
non-transient error. If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
 (0x800423F4))
	More information
End time:	14/05/2010 12:41:50 PM
Start time:	14/05/2010 12:41:12 PM
Time elapsed:	00:00:38
Data transferred:	0 MB
Cluster node	-
Recovery Point Type	Express Full
Source details:	\Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\Host01
Protection group:	VS01

Please check that the Event Service, the VSS service and the shadow copy
provider service is running, and check for errors associated with these
services in the Application Event Log on the server VS01.domain.com. Please
allow 10 minutes for VSS to repair itself and then retry the operation.
For more information on this error, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=132612.

The error indicates there will be some VSS errors in the event logs. I've
checked the Hyper-V server and Host1, both show simple Information errors:
Hyper-V
-The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the running state.
-The DPMRA service entered the running state.
Host1
-The Virtual Disk service entered the running state.

The Hyper-V's VSS Writer reports the following:
Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
   Writer Id: {xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx}
   Writer Instance Id: {xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx}
   State: [1] Stable
   Last error: Non-retryable error

Not quite sure what to do from here... I can't get any info on this error.
A lost of posts on here ask for logs. In this case, what log would be the
best to view?

Many thanks for any assistance.
Matt

Can you check if you have updated the integration components in HOST01. In
case you have not, please update them and try the backup again.

Thanks,
--Angad.

Hi Angad,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm 99% sure the integration components have already been instaled.
I've just run through the install again. I can't reboot atm though.

I tested Host1 again with no luck, it's failed with the same error.

Any other ideas? Or will I have to reboot Host1 first?

Cheers
Matt

Matt,

Apart from the first time install, you may have to update the integration
components on the VM as and how you install hotfixes on the host. Before
rebooting, can you go to Add Remove Programs in the VM and check the version
of the integration components showing up?

Thanks,
--Angad.

Hi Angad,

It appears the Integration Components don't show up in Add/Remove Programs
on Windows 2008. How can I obtain the version?

Host1 was rebooted over the weekend and it's working ok now. The
Integration Components must have been out of date...
Many thanks for your help!
