How to setup LAN free backup using DPM 2007

  • Follow

Hi guys,
I need some expert support on this matter. My client wanted to verify if LAN
free setup is supported under DPM 2007? Currentley we setup HYPER-V vpc's in
his blade center. His SAN and blade center connect via FO (Fiber Optic) He
planned to have another FO connection using HBA adapters between SAN and
blade centers. how can we tell DPM to use that connection to use for backup?

If I understand it correctly you don't want to use the LAN to
transfer the data from the Production server to the DPM, because the
Production server data is present on the SAN which is connected to DPM also.
This is not possible the reason is, the data is changing on the production
server and its changes are tracked only the production server hence DPM will
not have the idea about what files have changed. Hence DPM can't pull the
data directly from the SAN whose contents are getting changed on the
Production server for incremental backups.

But if you are looking for avoiding Initial load, for example if you want to
protect huge amount of data, the initial backup is going to take too long.
To avoid this using SAN you can create a mirror/clone for the original data.
Enable that the cloned/Mirrored LUN is available in the SAN UI. Fracture
the cloned/Mirrore LUN. Enable the cloned/Mirrored LUN is
available on the DPM server. Use custom Volume method for creating the PG
for the data to be protected and select the manual load instead of Initial
replication/automatic replication. Then create the replica Directory
structure as per the manual load directory structure. Now you can trigger a
consistency check. This will sync with the Replica data to be consistent
with Production server data by transferring necessary changes. This
procedure varies from SAN device to device. Here is a document describes how
it is done for Equilogic SAN devices
http://www.cns-service.com/equallogic/pdfs/tr-dpm07-equalogic-solution.pdf.
Take a look at the sections 1) SAN Initialization of the First DPM 2)
Replica Steps to follow for SAN recovery.

Another way solve it by creating a Backup LAN network. DPM
will use it for transferring the data over this network so that the other
networks are free for others applications to use. Please find more

Hope this helps you, Thanks,
