From what I have read SQL Server2000 needs to be on SP4 for the VSS to work, 
the issue with this is I don't beleive the SBSMONITORING has a patch or 
hotfix to allow a VSS writer to work. 

I also have read that you should not do an SQL SP4 upgrade on it.


Can someone confirm this.

So how have people backed up SBS2003 servers if you can't back this up 
nativily in DPM2010 (or 2007), have you been doing SQL backups and then 
restoring them later?


This is the last part I need to be able to backup a sbs2003 server (with 
sharepoint).

        To my understanding SQL SP4 applies to SBSMONITORING SQL instance on 
SBS server as well. Can you please elaborate why SP4 can't be installed on 
SBS server? If installing SP4 is a problem as you said you can create local 
SQL backups and then protect those backups using DPM server. This might need 
lots disk space to maintain recovery points. Please find more information
