Agent installation is failing with the following error:
The protection agent installation failed because the files needed to install the protection agent (version 3.0.7558.0) are missing from the SERVERNAME DPM server. (ID 317)
Recommended Action:
Reinstall the missing files by running DPM Setup and DPM updates.
I can do a manual install. Do i really need to do a complete reinstall. Also where do i get the DPM 2010 updates
I have the RC version
Second Question:
Why does my client PCs show as Diconnected Clients, even though i am on the same LAN. DPM can ping clients and vice versa and i can perform a manual sync from the client and DPM
thanks

Is it happening on a machine DPM 2010 is installed fresh or is it
happening on a any upgrade from earlier DPM version like DPM 2010 Beta/DPM
2007 SP1? Can you please verify that the agent files are present under:
%programfiles%\Microsoft DPM\DPM\ProtectionAgents, it should have
directories RA\3.0.7558.0\amd64, RA\3.0.7558.0\i386 , AC\3.0.7558.0\amd64,
AC\3.0.7558.0\i386 and files in them. If you don't have files you can copy
these files from some other DPM 2010 RC server from the same location. If
you have the files but still its not able to install then can you please
mail the logs present under %programfiles%\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Temp to
praveend-at-microsoft-dot-com after the agent installation failed with the
below error. You don't need to re-install DPM to fix this issue you can
manually install the agent and connect it to DPM if all other DPM features
are working without any issues. There are no updates available for DPM 2010
RC, only upgrade to DPM 2010 RTM will be available.
Client PC machines will be shown as disconnected client, if
Protection Group is created by selecting "Client" option in the first wizard
of PG creation. This flow is specifically designed for disconnected clients
like laptops which disconnect quite often with DPM network. In your case
like Desktop PCs which are always on and always connected to network you can
choose "Server" option and protect like protection any server machine. There
are different protection policies that are used to handle always connected
machines when compared to disconnected machines. Hope this helps you
understand when to use Server option vs Client option.

Praveen,
Is there any documentation on the difference between the way DPM backups up
a protection group created with the "Client" option and the "Server"
option...
There are lots of Laptops out there, but there must be a lot more desktop
clients that will be backed up by DPM and it seems counter intuitive to have
a "Client" option that really is only intended for remote clients.

Both desktops and laptops should be protected using the client option since
neither of these fall in the "server" category. Some of the benefits of
using client options would be,
1. Ability to specific well known folders for protection such as "User
profiles".
2. Guaranteed syncs whenever the machines power up and connects to the
network. Even desktops get shutdown during nights.
3. Alerts are more applicable for client scenarios (SLA missed alerts).
4. Scale.
5. EUR.
etc.
