DPM 2007 - is there a way to protect VHd's on secondary DPM server

  • Follow

Hi,

we've just set up our second DPM server for DPM to DPM replication which
will eventually be located at our DR site. I would like to extend the current
protection of our VHD's on our Hyper-V servers to this second DPM server.

However when we configured the second DPM server we noticed that in the list
of "protected computers" the Hyper-V servers do not show up. We are currently
only protecting the actual VM's and nothing else on the physical host.

Does anyone know what requirements need to be met so that we can protect the
VM's on the secondary DPM server?

Thanks.,

Please confirm that you have done this step mentioned here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb795680.aspx

2.To enable protection of the replicas, you must establish communications
between the secondary DPM server and the data sources protected by the
primary DPM server. When local data sources are protected on a cluster node,
you should enable protection for each cluster node in addition to the
cluster. To establish communications, perform the following steps:

a.On the Agents tab in the Management task area, select a primary DPM
server.

b.In the Details pane, next to Protected servers enabled for protection,
click Modify.

c.In the View details of protected computers dialog box, select one or more
computers, and then click Enable protection.

d.Type the user name and password for a domain account that is a member of
the local administrators group on all selected computers, and then click OK.

The Protection enabled column in the View details of protected computers
dialog box will change to Yes.

Hi,

I've followed those exact steps and the Hyper-V servers are not listed in
the "Protected Servers" list. On the primary DPM we are only backing up the
VM's and the "Initial Store". The only other item being protected by DPM is
the "System State" of the Hyper-V server itself.

Aha - just a blinding thought - We are currently only backing up the VM's to
tape and not disk - would this be the problem?

thanks.
