Does Consistency Check obey "exclude" rules in protection group?

I know...please refrain from the comments. The guests are NT4 & 2000. All
other servers are Hyper-v core w/plenty of guests on a SAN.
When DPM 2007 runs a consistency check on the 2003 box, it becomes totally
unresponsive & we have to kill the check. (1) Does the consistency check
obey the "excludes" defined in protection group or does it check the entire
disk/volume? (2) Any other excludes that should be defined besides the
virtual machines and vmware server executables?

DPM error 43 and 53!
Hello,
I am at my end trying to correct this error. I am running DPM2007SP1 on

my way through most of my daily DPM errors, however this error has been

Hyper-V's are a Hyperion development environment and have quite a bit of
traffic.
I setup this PG about a week ago and was successful in building 4 of 5

Hello,
I have a doubt about installation of DPM2007.
I need to install it on a Server that is a Domain Controller, because this
server has the Tape Device.
On my researches I found an article with FAQ of DPM2007 that was saying that
the DPM server must be a dedicated, single-purpose server, the server cannot
be either a domain controller or an application server and the server cannot
be the Management Server for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager.
I wanna know if its not recommended to install it on a Domain Controller, or
its installation will not event start if d

DPM 2010 Hyper-V Backup ini Saved State only option
Using DPM 2010 backing up a file server we only have the option to backup
the Hyper-V in a saved State. According to the following conditions that
must be met to allow online backup.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637102.aspx
The one issue I am confused about and we also have implemented is, "A
ShadowStorage assignment of a volume inside the VM is explicitly set to a
different volume other than itself."
Our shadow copy is configured to use a seperate volume. This was done
following Microsoft recomendations for best performance and reliability. See

DPM 2010 easy questions

DPM 2010 which we've never used before. We like DPM 2010 because it's seems

In order of importance:
Q1: I gather we should NOT install DPM directly on the Hyper-V host and
instead use another server entirely, ie. a dedicated backup server hardware

Q2: When is DPM RTM going to be ready? Should we wait or should we go for

1) when using the mobile client with DPM 2010 does the schema extension need
to be run to enable users to use the DPM agent to recover local files (ex.,

2) if so, does the same rule apply that requires share backups rather than
volume backups to allow EUR on client desktops? That is, do i need to backup

DPM2010 RC backup of Hyper-V R2 Essentials Business Server Security Server kills network
We have virtualised Windows Essential Business Server across two physical

As a result network traffic was so severe we had to terminate the backup. We
have no issues performing a backup of a 30Gb Exchange Storage group so this
increase in network traffic is not normal. Known issue ?

DPM 2007 - is there a way to protect VHd's on secondary DPM server

However when we configured the second DPM server we noticed that in the list

only protecting the actual VM's and nothing else on the physical host.
Does anyone know what requirements need to be met so that we can protect the

DPM2010RC Bug-Cannot back up cluster items when DPM server is a no
In lieu of running a virtual machine we resorted to testing the DPM2010 RC
server component on one of the cluster nodes. The "set-dpmglobalpropery
....local..." option is set however I get an error when I attempt to back up
any items that are on the cluster.
This is fixed, however, if you install the DPMRA on the DPM server from the
MSI file in the ProtectionAgents folder of the DPM server. This added the
DPMRA service and I set it to automatically start, and everything was peachy.
This is probably a bug with local protection that I worked around and should
be properly fixed.

the VM. I haven't found anything helpful on the web, although there are a lot
of reports of these kind of errors. The VM is 2008 R2 and the host is also
2008 R2. The VM didn't have this issue on machine A, and machine B (the host)
doesn't have this issue. Any ideas? Thanks!

Emailing scheduled reports error
Hi folks,
DPM2010 RC recently upgraded from DPM2010 Beta where this worked just fine.
When I try to enter email recipients for a report, I receive the following
error:
DPM cannot set up an e-mail subscription for this report. The information
may be missing or incorrect.
Click Options in the Actions pane, then click the SMTP Server tab, and
provide the correct SMTP server name and e-mail address.

The SMTP options are set, and I can send test messages to verify.
Any advice?
Thanks

Manually creating a replica
I have followed the article on TechNet on How to Manually Create a Replica

At one of my sites, I have about 500MB of data that I would like to protect.
I have followed the steps to manually create the replica but when I start the

importing the data is so that the initial replica doesn't go over the WAN.

DPM sometimes uses too many tapes
Hi, i have problem with DPM long term backups on tape. I have collocation
enabled so that is not a problem. Sometimes DPM uses too many tapes for same
protection group, sometimes it uses 1, and then sometimes 2 - 4. Amount of
data is always same. Can anybody help me please, what could be the problem?

Remove-RecoveryPoint does not work in DPM 2010
Dear experts,
we've upgraded our DPM 2007 system to DPM 2010 RC last week (we need to
protect Exchange 2010). Now 've tried to remove some recoverypoint from tape,
because I have made an mistake in the backup schedule yesterday. I've used
the common procedure:
1. $pg=get-protectiongroup
2. $ds=get-datasource $pg[3]
3. $rp=get-recoverypoint $ds[0]
4. remove-recoverypoint $rp[22] -forcedeletion
I did not use -confirm:$False in order to have a last chance to check, if I
delete the correct recovery point.
What happens is: I can see, that it's the right recovery point, my

DPM 2007 does not see SQL 2005 Analysis Services Database
Hi !
We have DPM 2007 latest hotfix running and protecting a server with SQL 2005
and SQL 2000 installed. Also Analysis Services for SQL 2005 installed on that
server which has a database mounted.
When modifying the protection group I see the SQL 2000 instance and the SQL
2005 instance but I do not see the Analysis Services Database or instance in
DPM.
How can I backup that database with DPM ?
Thanks for your help,
Alex

Protection Group not using both tape drives
I have a protection group setup to backup directly to tape. It involves

The other drive is idle. Should the protection group not be utilizing both
available drives?

DPM2010RC - Tape schedule keeps resetting to old settings
Hi,
I have started to use DPM2010RC to backup our servers at work and intend to purchase the full version when it's RTM.
As for the problem.. I have setup a custom recovery goal (daily with a retention of one week), and a secondary goal of weekly with a retention of one month. The idea being there is a backup Monday to Friday (which will be overwritten the following week) and then the weekly backup takes place on the Friday (a set of 5 Friday tapes) giving us a months worth of retention in total.
It's the Backup Schedule that's the problem. The default setting is to backup every day o

MTATempStore$ share security vulnerability - Full permissions set for Everyone group
DPM protected members have a share MTATempStore$ that has permissions
assigned to the Everyone group. This is considered a security vulnerability
in our environment. The share is necessary for proper DPM operation.
Praveen D [MSFT] posted on 2/7/2010 a response that indicates read
permission needs to be assigned to the DPMRADCOMTrustedMachines group, but a
later response indicated that permission wasn't sufficient to solve the
user's problem. There is also a DPMRADmTrustedMachines group which also
contains the DPM server computer account.
Does anyone know the minimum share

Problems & questions about recovering shares
I'm piloting DPM 2010 as a backup solution for a clustered file server. This
has led to a few questions:
1. Since DPM doesn't actually backup share permissions without a System
State backup, what's the difference between a Share backup and a Volume
backup? Why would I choose one over the other?
2. If I backup the data using a Volume backup, how can I get the share
permissions restored? I tried restoring a System State backup onto one of the
cluster nodes, but I suspect that the permissions on the folder were
defaulted when the node rebooted to finish the SS restore (thus fail

Why does an ACL change on a dir/file perform a full backup?
I have a server that's has 1 drive fully protected and uses DFRS to
replicate to other sites, recently we made some ACL changes on a lot of
data, and DFRS just pushes the ACL changed with very little data transferred
over the wire, but DPM counts it as a full file change and filled up the
recovery point volume. Is that expected? It would seem that an ACL change
could be stored is a much smaller format then the full file being backed up,
if something like DFRS can do it.

Exchange 2003 and DPM2007
I use Exchange 2003 on server Windows 2003 32bit and DPM2007 on server
Windows 2008R2.
The replica of Storage group Storage Group on MyServer.MyDomain is
inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for
data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency
check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery
points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.
For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the
databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run

DPM and supporto to client protection
While searching info on the DPM licenses I found that phrase [1] that
confused me:
"Required to provide file level protection for Windows XP or Windows
Vista. Includes support for system state backup. Support is limited to
systems with an =93always-on=94 network connection; devices that are
routinely disconnected are not currently supported. "
We are evaluating the use of DPM with clients running XP and Vista and
they will be switch off at the end of the working day. Is it a problem
for DPM ?
Thanks for the clarification.

Database migration
I am restoring a database backup DPMDB.BAK from a 32 bit WIN2K3/DPM server
running DPM 2007 to a 64 bit WIN08/DPM server. After installing the 64 bit OS
and 64 bit DPM application I am using the Powershell dpmsync -restoredb
-dbloc c:\DPMDB.BAK command. The 32 bit server is being replaced therfore the
name of the new 64 bit server is the same. To sync the database I am running
the dpmsync -sync Powershell command at which time an error is displayed
stating that dpmsync has stopped. What is a solution for this issue?

DPM Error on end-user recovery permissions

I currently have a server with DPM 2010 RC, version 3.0.7558.0 running and
every 12 hours I'm getting the following error:
Failed to update permissions used for end-user recovery on <servername>.
Permissions update failed for the following reason: (ID 3123)

I've seen that turning off end-user recovery will clear this warning,
however, I've been told that I need to keep it on.
Can someone point me in the right direction to see why this is happening?

Use DPM Storage Pool Space
Would it cause DPM (2007 SP1 or DPM 2010 RC) any problems if I manually
created new simple volumes from the unallocated space on the hard disks in
the DPM storage pool? Although such volumes would be carved out of the DPM
storage pool disks, they would be used for non-DPM purposes. Is DPM smart
enough not to get messed up if I do this?
We have many terabytes of unallocated space in the DPM storage pool, and
we'd like to use it for other purposes...

Restoring shares WITH share permissions using DPM
I'm backing up about 58 shares (using DPM 2007 SP1) and need to restore said
shares to another (duplicate) server. Upon restore, the share permissions
are missing, while the security permissions remain intact. I'm backing up
what appears to be volumes and shares so I can recover either way as
well....but the results are the same, no share permissions restored. Is
there a step\process I'm missing???? Any help appreciated!

Agent issue w/ DPM 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 w/ Hyper-V
I've installed the DPM 64-bit client on a Win 2008 R2 server w/ Hyper-V
(using manual installation) that is not a DC, and is in the same domain as
the DPM server. When I try to use SetDPMServer, using 3 formats for server
name: NetBIOS name alone, FQDN style, and domain-qualified, I get failures
each time. In the domain-qualified case it's an "RPC server is unavailable",
in the other cases it's an 0x80004005 "Unspecified error". I've disabled the
firewall internally (I can ping the DPM server), and I've confirmed that the
DPM server is in the necessary local security groups.

DPM Upgrade Advisor - How to upgrade DPM across releases
Dear DPM users,
In the past we have received questions on upgradability of DPM and the
procedure to upgrade DPM from one version to another. In order to address
these questions, we have come up with an Excel based tool called DPM Upgrade
advisor that suggests to you the upgrade procedures given the deployment
information (current DPM version, location of DPM database, operating system
on DPM server, disaster recovery enabled etc).
