CRM appointment categories do not sync to CRM!?

Since we can't customize the activities, we're trying to use the
categories.  I used the Sales for Outlook client to create a CRM
appointment and entered a category.  The appointment was created in
CRM, but the category is blank!  Is this how it's supposed to work?  I
find that hard to believe.
