CRM 4.0 CTP 3 + Server 2008 RC 1 + SQL 2008 CTP 5
Hi all,
I have tried to install CRM 4.0 CTP3 based on Server 2008 RC1 and SQL
2008 CTP5.
I have encountered the following error message while registering a new
Organization :
"Version string portion was too short or too long "
I have googled around and found this little information :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/chats/trans/sql/07_0611_tn_katmai.mspx
Brian Welcker (Expert):
Q: I've tried to install the CRM titan CTP with SQL server 2008 ,the
reporting services failed to be authenticated with the CRM generating
this error "Version string portion was too short or too long ", Is
there major issues between them both?
A: I believe CRM is designed for SSRS 2005. I doubt they have tried
this on SSRS 2008. You might want to follow up with the CRM team.
Anyone have a hint to resolve this problem ? Maybe i should revert
back to SQL 2005 for a moment.
Thanks,
Hadi

Hi Hadi,
CRM is very particular about using Reporting Services and SQL in general for
that matter (i.e. only installing to a default instance). You definitely want
to consider rolling back to SQL 2005.
On a tangent, we do alot of beta testing at my company because we're
developers and need to test against upcoming platforms. We usually only load
one beta product per server at a time to isolate any errors that come up
before we load multiple beta products on the same server. You may want to
start with a Win2k3 box running SQL 2005, add CRM 4.0, get it working and
then upgrade the remaining components, all the while testing with each
configuration along the way.

I've ran into a lot of problems with Titan (CRM 4.0 RC0) running on
Windows server 2008 (Longhorn). I've decided to wait until the RTM
release of CRM before i do any more beta testing with longhorn or sql
2008

Also, you are probably wasting your time with CTP3, its superseded by RC0

There was an issue with a version string that SQL 2008 reported to us, and we
fixed the problem on our side for RC0/RTM.
