Got a new laptop with windows vista home. installed office 97 and getting out
of memory error.
downloaded sr-1 and sr-2 from microsoft
after double clicking the file for sr-1
Sr-1 will not install, it starts by unzipping and then just sits there. if
you click on the file again it starts again, unzips and goes directly to the
need to reboot screen. after rebooting the serivice release has not installed.
any answers out there

I'm not using Vista at the moment (I have it on a different PC, but not on
the one I'm using right now). Try right-clicking the service-release .exe
files, and then select Run as Administrator. Does that help?

tried to run as administrator did the same thing. here is the sequence
first got popup box security warning sr-1 patch clicked run
then got license agreement box clicked yes it unziped some files then got
welcome to patch box that says the patch can take up to 45 minutes to finish
depending upon hardware before continuing machine must meet mimimum
requirements:
must be running windows 95,nt3.51 or nt4.0 or higher
shut down all currently runing office 97 apps
must temporarily have 30mb free disk space to run patch
clicked continue and nothing happens. i have waited the 45 mins and rebooted
but the patch was not installed.
help still needed.
thanks

Hi Tarti,
Does temporarily removing User Account Control (UAC) help resolve the
situation? The how-to is shown in Option 3: Remove the Safety, here:
http://allenbrowne.com/bug-17.html
If not, perhaps you might want to consider installing Virtual PC, and then
creating a new Virtual machine with an earlier operating system. Then install
and patch Access 97 on this virtual machine. Virtual PC 2007 is a free
download from Microsoft.

There is a small chance that 1 or more files in SR-1 is corrupt. The
behavior that you describe would result, (although, I'd expect it to throw
an error) In any case, try downloading a new copy of both SR-1 and SR-2 and
install them.

Note that the 45 minutes is applicable to, say, Pentium 75s or such
back in Windows 95 days. Last time I installed SR-1 it took a very
short period of time. Such as less than a minute or so.
