I am experiencing many instability issues since I installed the latest
update to Mac Office 2004 (11.3).

* Entourage (11.2.5) database getting corrupted or functions crashing the SW
(such as printing)
* Word (11.3) getting unstable / crashing (but not always) when manipulating
graphics within a document (and all work done since last Save are lost)
* Powerpoint (11.3) getting unstable or crashing (but not always) when:
copying graphics from the ToolBox, manipulating graphics or large files (and
all work done sine the last Save is lost). I noticed a heavy disk activity
and slowdown before problems happens

The last time these problems happened, only Entourage and Powerpoint, or
Entourage and Word, were opened. However, I have used Graphic Converter and
Preview from time to time before the problems.

All apps and OS (Tiger) SW are latest revs.

Thanks for any help.

Denis

Hi Denis -

Have you run Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions since the 11.3 update?
That may very well resolve the whole ball o wax.

If it doesnt I would suggest reinstalling the 11.3 by d/l from Mactopia,
not via AutoUpdate. Follow the instructions as per the d/l site:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/

If you still have problems take a look at the troubleshooting steps here:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

Post back with specifics if you still have problems.

Office Mac 2004 Instability issues since updated to last version (11.3)Hello
DM,

Can you please post or email me the Microsoft Error Reporting/Apple Crash
Reporter logs when you hit these crashes? That would help us a lot.

Also, out of curiosity, are you running on a PowerPC or Intel based Mac? If
the latter, which exact model and OS build do you have? To find this, go to
Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Machine Model and Apple Menu >
About This Mac > More Info > Software > System Version.

I've noticed (this is nothing new) that some machines are shipping
w/different builds than what's the "latest" on others. For instance, my Mac
Pro (MacPro1,1) has OS 10.4.8 8L2127. Apparently, Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros
ship with OS 10.4.8 8N1037.

Thanks,
Andrew

I have a Power PC Powerbook G4.
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.8 (8L127)

I am not sure, but I disabled the Daemon database utility and everthing
worked fine since then. My suspicion comes from the fact that when those
problems happened, I could hear a lot of HD "crunching". I have 1GB of RAM
and only had Powerpoint, Word and Entourage opened.

Not sure, but so far so good.
Nut there is still a problem that needs fixing.

BTW, I have run Repair Permissions before and after installing the updates +
used Cocktail + Disk Warrior.

Thanks,

Denis

Here is an other data point.

I had a suggestion to re-install the 11.3 update (but not from SW Update, I
downloaded it from the web site). Which I did.
I worked for a while and sent the computer to sleep after I was finished.
Today, I awaken the computer and I get the message that my database is
damaged and I must quit all Office applications... I had to rebuilt the
database again. Then I re-opened Entourage and I could hear a lot of disk
activity (nothing else is opened) again. I disabled the Automatic
Notifications and it stopped.

Could the Database Daemon be the issue?

Here is an other data point.

I had a suggestion to re-install the 11.3 update (but not from SW Update, I
downloaded it from the web site). Which I did.
I worked for a while and sent the computer to sleep after I was finished.
Today, I awaken the computer and I get the message that my database is
damaged and I must quit all Office applications... I had to rebuilt the
database again. Then I re-opened Entourage and I could hear a lot of disk
activity (nothing else is opened) again. I disabled the Automatic
Notifications and it stopped.

Could the Database Daemon be the issue?

Someone with a similar issue said that deleting the preference file for
Office Notifications fixed it. The file to delete is located here:
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist

Later in the day, after doing as suggested below, Powerpoint crashed.
I was just working on a presentation when I suddenly heard a lot of disk
activity; them I got a message saying that "Powerpoint encountered a problem
and needed to close" etc...

I don't know what to do next. I have tried everything:
- deleting Prefs files
- rebuilding the database (many times)
- repairing permissions (Disk Utility)
- Clean caches, run Cron scripts (Cocktail)
- rebuilt directory (Disk Warrior)
- even re-installed everything (after un-installing it)

???

I only have problems with Office applications. Nothing else.

One last bit of information.

Later on, again working with Powerpoint with nothing else opened and
Database Daemon not running, I was still hearing disk activity so I checked
with System Profiler. Powerpoint was using 488MB of RAM and 1.26GB of
virtual memory! While this was happening, Powerpoint was crawling (very slow
response, even when just typing text).

So I am not sure it was the Entourage Database Daemon that was causing the
problem.

Any suggestions?

I've been monitoring the thread since my earlier post but haven't really had
much to offer beyond what the others have suggested with one seemingly minor
exception.

If I'm wrong please disregard, but I get the impression that you not only
leave your system on 24/7, but that you leave various applications launched
without ever shutting them down. If I'm anywhere close to being right,
however, that could at least be a contributing factor.

I realize that there are differing schools of thought about powering down
(energy conservation v. surge of power v. blahblahblah on both sides of the
issue) but the fact remains that the OS as well as the way most software is
written involves a little "housecleaning" which typically occurs at one or
the other of two events - start-up & shutdown. IIRC correctly, Apple made a
major adjustment from the way OS X originally ran cron scripts (in the
middle of the night) in order to have things tidied up at startup & catching
up on anything that may have been missed re daily/weekly/monthly scripts.

Even with a PB or other laptop my humble opinion is that if you aren't going
to use a program for any length of time, Quit it rather than leaving it
'hanging around' open. It takes very little time to launch it when you need
it. Also, Power the system down completely on the same basis. Putting it to
"sleep" for hours on end just isn't that much of a convenience - especially
when the Apple Discussions forums are littered with what appear to be
sleep-related issues... not uncommon to some of those you describe.

This morning, I got the "all office applications need to quit... Database
corrupted..." message. Only Entourage and Safari were open. Had to rebuild
the Database again.

Office Notifications was not activated.

Hello DM,

As I requested earlier in the thread, it would help us a lot to get the
Microsoft Error Reporting logs either posted here or in email to me when you
hit these crashes. Hearing a lot of disk "crunching" and activity doesn't
give us much to go on.

Thanks,
Andrew

When I get the ""all office applications need to quit... Database
corrupted..." message, there is no other information available.

I didn't experienced the "heavy activity + Powerpoint crash" problem yet.

I will keep you informed.

I using 2 versions of Mac Office 2004 (Japanese and English). How do I set the default for which version my machine uses to open office files? It would of course be better if MS allowed users to switch menu languages within the program just as Mac does with its OS and associated software. But since that is not the case, I have had to purchase install the English version of Office 2004 (at great expense both monetarily and memory wise). When I open files already on my computer it always opens them with the "default" version of Office 2004 which is in Japanese. I can't seem to ...

Yahoo Sports Updates: Backtracks on Vista 64
If anyone has any ideas on this one, I'd be most interested... I have noted that when I try to follow sports events on Yahoo with real time updates, after working properly for a few minutes, Windows Explorer 8 freezes at a certain point in the game...if I click on the "reload page" icon, it gives the updated status of the games, and then after about 15 seconds reverts to the earlier point in the game... This seems to be specific to my Vista system (HP Pavilion), it does not occur on my XP systems. If anyone has thoughts on this, they would be greatly appreciate...

How can I import a spreadsheet file from finance.yahoo.com for the history prices of a stock and import it into my charting software. My charting software reads ASCII "DOHLCV" or D,O,H,L,C,V or "Date", "O", "H", "L", "C", "V" . I have tried for a week trying to manipulate the data to be read by my charting software but it will not take it. When downloading data it automatically opens excel 97 spreadsheet and inserts the data. I save it as a CSV file but my charting program will not read it and when I open the fil...
