salaries for GP professionals?

Hi,
Excuse the divergence from technical discussions, but what are typical
salaries for Great Plains consultants working as employees for
partners?
I'm asking because I've been working for a company that uses Great
Plains, and have been the point person on administration, upgrades,
installations, etc for it for about 5 years now. I make about 85k, but
I also handle our CRM installation, and do software development as
well; though so I'm not sure how that factors in to the equation. I'm
thinking about applying for a job with a partner, but have no clue as
to what typical salaries are. This is in the Baltimore area, but I
guess any major market on the east coast would be a good comparison.
Also what about for independant GP consultants that go it on their own
or through a recruiting firm?

I ask because I'm keenly aware of what the going rate is for software
developers like me since we're fairly common, but my circle of GP
"friends" is pretty much limited to the guy that works for our partner.
I also hold a number of GP certifications, but am not a quote-unquote
certified "Master" yet.

Sounds like you are doing well. I have worked for several partners in the
Mid-West. Even with a lot of certifications and 20 years experience
implementing systems....I couldn't find anyone willing to pay more than 50
grand unless you actually become a Sr Manager or a Partner of the
organization. I have been offered positions in areas like San Fransicso,
etc. which would pay more but that's all relative to the cost of living.
The grass always seems greener.....if you want to make more....go out on
your own and be the master of your own destiny.

I'll second Jana's comments. My common retort is the 90's are over. I'd say
the amount you quoted is very good. If you worked for a company that paid
commissions or bonuses, then that would help you. But, if your company has a
down period, it can obviously hurt, too. I've worked on all commission and
for salary with a limited annual bonus. When times are good, the first one is
best. When times are bad, which they have been the last few years, the second
option is best.

Wow, that's pretty sobering. I'd expected the answer to range between
70-115k or so on the east coast at least.. I've seen our GP
consultants a few times over the years and they always appear to be
busting their arses, driving from one client to another, giving advice
to us over the phone while stuck in traffic, remoting in from home
after working long and hard at another client site, sending emails at 9
or 10pm. Mind you I do a lot of those long hours too, but the
difference is that it's generally a known quantity - same people to
interface with, same GP installation, same project - which I would
think is a little less stressful. On top of that, we're billed
150/hour by the partner for their services so I figured surely there
was enough built into that to accomodate a decent wage for this area.

The other option is trying to do consulting of my own, but then the
weakness I have is that experience of zipping all over town and
managing multiple GP installations at the same time. My strength is in
building and managing commerce sites that interface with the SOP
module, and managing our own installation as opposed to zipping all
over town.

On that note, do partners ever take in contractors on an as-needed
basis (ie. if they're overbooked, or have a need for a particular skill
such as commerce development - do they ever bring in contractors to do
that work instead of maintaining someone on the payroll full time?)

I did see an ad recently in my area for a contract GP developer
offering 50-75/hour that inspired me to push harder as I was thinking
about getting certified last year.

BTW here when I mention "zipping all over town":

My strength is in
building and managing commerce sites that interface with the SOP
module, and managing our own installation as opposed to zipping all
over town.

I mean the idea of managing 10 or 12 different GP customers, from home,
on the road, the office, their office, weekends, weeknights etc. Not
trying to denegrate the consultants. If anything, I figured they must
be paid 100k or more to manage all that.

We'll bring in contractors for things like development and network
assistance. We have not used contractors that often for core GP functionality
consulting. However, if you do not have the time/resources/expertise, I know
that other partners have certainly tried to bring in other partners as
subcontractors.

Yep...that is the life. As a consultant; I have run several projects
simutaneously, give advice over the phone; take late night 'emergencies',
sell product, work like a dog and been billed out at between $140-175 an
hour. It doesn't trickle down.

Yes, some people will subcontract. Some will not as they don't want you to
know their customer. If you are good at multi-tasking...you get used to
having many clients to keep happy at the same time.
