How to display the full 100-character item description?

Hello again. I'm still waiting for our Consultant to provide us the
much-needed code for displaying the item notes in our Sales Reports. We don't
have VBA, nor any third party chunks but Report Writer to enable us to
customize some of our reports.

For now, I'm trying to modify the sales report such that all 100 characters
of the Item Description will be displayed. However, even that doesn't work! I
have read some forums but none of them seem to solve my problem.

Need help...again :(

To display the text notes on your report, you can use the Report Writer
function RW_GetNoteText which will also parse the text in a number of lines.

{ -- RW_GetNoteText -- }
function returns string OUT_string;
in currency IN_NoteIndex; { Note Index of Note }
in integer IN_characters;  { Number of Characters per Line }
in integer IN_line;            { Line Number to Return }

As you can see below, the function accepts the Note Index, the number of
characters per line, and the line number you would like to display the
characters on. You will have to setup calculated fields for each line to be
parsed out: A typical call to this function in Report Writer will look like
this:

NOTE_LINE1 = FUNCTION_SCRIPT(RW_GetNoteText  IV_ITEM_MSTR.NOTEINDX  80 1)

NOTE_LINE2 = FUNCTION_SCRIPT(RW_GetNoteText  IV_ITEM_MSTR.NOTEINDX  80 2)

Where NOTE_LINE1 and NOTE_LINE2 are calculated fields.

Report Writer has a limitation of 80 characters for calculated text fields,
so you can only parse out 80 characters at a time.

You can use the RW_ParseString function to parse out your Item Description
field into multiple lines. The function is as follows:

{ -- RW_ParseString -- }
function returns string OUT_string;
in string IN_string;				{ String Field to Parse }
in integer IN_characters;		{ Number of Characters per Line }
in integer IN_line;				{ Line Number to Return }

You will pass in the IV_ITEM_MSTR.ITEMDESC field and the number of
characters, and line number you would want to return the value to, similar to
the first function. But, I still cannot understand why you can't display the
full 100 characters on your report. Have you expanded the length of the field
and perhaps change the font size?

Best regards,

Create calculated fields using the RW_ParseString report Writer function. For example to break the 100 characters into 3 lines of
upto 60 characters.

RW_ParseString(IV_Item_MSTR.ItemNumber  60  1)

RW_ParseString(IV_Item_MSTR.ItemNumber  60  2)

RW_ParseString(IV_Item_MSTR.ItemNumber  60  3)

Have a look at the following post for more information on rw functions.

Rather than using the Item Master's Item Description you can also get the description from the Sales Transaction Amounts Work
table.

For example:

RW_ParseString(SOP_LINE_WORK.ItemNumber  60  1)

RW_ParseString(SOP_LINE_WORK.ItemNumber  60  2)

RW_ParseString(SOP_LINE_WORK.ItemNumber  60  3)

If you are trying to work with an "Options" report that uses a temporary table, I believe that VBA is the only solution. I will be posting
an article on http://blogs.msdn.com/DevelopingForDynamicsGP/ soon with the VBA example.

Thanks Mariano and David for your help. I was wondering how this function did
not work when i first tried it in displaying the item's notes on my report
...but now am just glad that it's working.

Mariano:
     The whole 100 characters did not display, i think, because the the
table used then was Sales Transaction Amounts Work. When I changed it to Item
Master table, every character in the Item Description was displayed.

With this resolved, my next challenge would be how to create a conditional
statement that will hide the Item Description field if Item Notes field is
with value. :-/

Thanks Mariano and David! I actually have the list of the RW_Functions
already that's why I'm wondering why it did not work when I first used the
RW_GetNoteText function with the Item Notes...but am just glad that it's
working now.

from Item Master table, there it was without any parsing at all.

Now the next challenge for me is how to make item description invisible
(even if it's not empty) when the item notes field is with value... :-/
