User changes last name

I have a network user with an associated mailbox. The user's name is jsmith
and the Exchange alias is jsmith. This user has a new last name now,
jjones. The user wants her email address to reflect the new name. She also
wants to have any mail that goes to her old address forwarded to the new
address.
Can I just rename some things or do I have to create another userid and
create the new mailbox and import all the email into the new mailbox and
forward the old email to the new one. That senario would also cause the user
to get a default profile on the desktop which I want to try to avoid. It
seems like their is something I can do, but I need some help on this one.

Best way is to create her an smtp alias and make that account her primary.
That way anything sent to her old smtp address will still get to her.

In AD, you can choose to rename a person by right clicking and choosing
rename, it will keep the same user sid, so her profile on her desktop won't
change.

So, she could login as jjones and it would be the exact same profile as
jsmith.

I understand that part of it, but how do I handle the new email address. It
will still reflect her old address, how can I rename all the relevant pieces
associated with her mailbox? Also what about forwarding from the old to the
new ?

I have tried creating a new userid and mailbox and then creating a new email
address under the old account and setting it to primary. However, when she
goes to send a message, it still shows her old email address. I then go back
into check to see if I set the new address to primary and the original
address is set back to primary. Its like it won't take the change.

How do I go about doing that ? Do I have to create a new userid for the name
change and create a new mailbox first ?

You are going about it all wrong. If you create a new user id and mailbox
now she has 2 logins and 2 mailboxes. You can rename the account but then
you would have to add the old alias as a smtp alias. Too much work. Here's
what you do.

1. Go into ADUC and bring up the properties for the user.
2. Go to the "Account" tab and change her login name.
3. Go to the "Email Addresses" tab and select "New".
4. Select "SMTP Address" and click OK.
5. Type in the new name @domain.com or whatever you use. Click OK.
6. Highlight the new name you just created and select "Set as Primary".
7. Uncheck the "Automatically update email addresses based on recipient
policy".
8. Apply and OK.

Now the user uses her new login name and can receive mail in the same
mailbox for her old name and new name and she retains all NTFS permissions.

It's probably not the preferred method, but you can simply create a new mail
account with the new name & email address, complete with mailbox and set the
security up for her old mailbox with Owner privileges of the old mailbox and
mount it into her Outlook so that she gets mail from both accounts at the
same time.

If you do that, all of the email from her existing contacts still get to her
and her email goes out with the new name. That way, even if she replies
directly to an email addressed to her old mail account, it will will note her
new email address in the From; field.

After she no longer gets mail from the old account, you can safely move over
or archive the remaining messages and delete the mailbox and disable the old
account altogether.

As for the profile, just copy her old computer profile over to Default user
and she will never know the difference between the two. Other things to
watch for: Files from the user's network folder will need to be copied over
to the new one. Third party programs that relied on her old SID would need to
be updated too, but those changes are all fairly simple.

The end result: New name in both Network account and email account, access
to all of her old emails, contacts and network shares & Identical desktop
environment.

I've done this several times and it is stable and dependable. I also use
this method of biggy-backing mailboxes to take care of contacts and customers
of terminated employees so that customers never see a drop in service.
