Sending outgoing mail through separate SMTP Server

Currently my exchange server is sending the mail directly to the Internet but we need to change that. I would like to have the Exchange server send the mail through a separate SMTP server in our DMZ and have that SMTP server send the mail on its way. What is the easiest way to accomplish this

Thanks.

It depends on whether you have an SMTP connection out to the Internet or you
are just using the default SMTP server. What you need is either on the SMTP
connector you have setup or the default SMTP virtual server, tell Exchange
the FQDN or IP address that you want outbound mail sent to.

If you are using the default SMTP virtual server set this on the "smart
host" box on the delivery tab, if you are using the SMTP connector then put
the IP address in [] i.e. [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] of the server that you want mail
to be sent to in the "Forward all mail through this connector..." textbox...

Hope that is clear.

Thanks for the quick reply. We are using the default SMTP server and I checked the properties and it seems we already have the correct smtp server specified in the smart host box. But, the option of "attempt direct delivery before sending to smart host" is checked so I suppose all I need to do to force all mail to go through the separate SMTP server is uncheck that box, correct

Thats correct. Also if you are using the IP address it also needs to go into
square brackets.

No message in outbox
I tried to send a message with 1Mb attachment to 40 recipients in the bcc field. It gave me an error message from the isp's server, the message was NOT sent (I've checked), it did NOT arrive in Sent Items, but neither is it in the Outbox any more.
