Restoring a Purged Message

Human Resources is requesting that I restore a message that a user
received, deleted, and purged from their recovery bin all in the same
day. So I definitely can't restore it easily through the Outlook
client.

I have the mail store set to "Do not permanently delete mailboxes and
items until the store has been backed up". I thought that would allow
me to restore purged messages in a case like this. I have restored
the entire mailbox store from backup (made 3 hours after the desired
message arrived) to an offline server. I've mounted up the database,
connected the user, etc., but the purged message is still not
available in Outlook. I am certain the message arrived that
afternoon; I see it in the Exchange Message Tracking Center.

Do I have to do something else to get those messages back, or am I out
of luck? I'm at Exchange 2000 SP3 with the May '04 post-SP3 rollup,
if that matters.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You're out of luck unless the message had been included in your backup, or
you had enabled journaling/archiving to send a copy of all mail to another
mailbox/mail-enabled PF.

In the distant past I have successfully run System Restore and returned the machine to an earlier time, so I am reasonably confident with its operation.
