Restore Mailboxs With First Strage Group Restore

Greetings All,
I'm a bit confused about backup and restores done with NTBackup on
Exchange 2003. I'm able to create backups without any error. I'm also
able to restore with out any error. However, lets say I have 10 mail
boxs and I do a backup. I then delete and purge 5 of those mail boxes
after my backup. Now, I want to restore those 5 boxes so I dismount my
stores and make sure "can be overwwitten" is checked. I then go to my
NTbackup utill and choose to restore my first storage group (which is
what I backed up) I check the option to remount the store after back up
and replay log files (I tried it with these options checked and
unhecked). At this point it seems as if the backup was success full I
do not receive any errors and the mailbox and private store
successfully remount themselvs. However I do not see the 5 mailboxes I
deleted and purged.

I assume that if I restore an entire storage group everthing under the
storage group should be restored including mailbox. Please help.
Thanks in advance for shedding some light on this.

This happens because of Exchange ability to restore "up to point of
failure". Exchange achieves that by way of transaction logging - all
database modifications (including mailbox deletions) are recorded to
transaction logs first and then (within seconds) to the database file.
When you restore database from last backup Exchange replays all
transaction logs to bring it up to point you started restore. This is
what has happened to you.

In order to restore some data can use Recovery Storage Group feature of
Exchange. See

and I think tynon has a misunderstanding of "can be overwritten". That
option is ony for when restor from offline backup and you can't mount
database and a message instruct you(or kb) to check that box.

no, that option is also for use when you need to restore a database from

Okay I think I got it. However, let me make sure. So, if I continue
to use NTBackup and it runs error free and I use a third party program
for individusl mailbox recovery like, quest recovery agent for exchange
I can consider myself protected? That is if my "database file"becomes
corupt I can restore the database file from the NTbackup (.bkf) and any
indivudual mail boxes with my third party software. Right?

Thank you all for your responses!!

things that can happen besides your Database files getting corrupt...you
want to ensure you have all the bases covered...

Exch2003 Delted Item Recovery
If I open additional mailboxes inside of outlook 2003, is there a way to get deleted item recovery to work on the other accounts? The only way I am able to choose deleted item recovery is if I'm logged in as that user that owns the mailbox - so in my scenario I can get to deleted item recovery for my account, but not any of the other ones I have opened. I have full mailbox access to those other mailboxes. Any ideas how to get this to work if it's even possible? Tom Mucha tom@ctcomp.com I don't believe it is possible...you need to be logged onto that specific mailbox... "...

[Group]
I have several charts that say [Group] after the file name. I can't copy anything from one of these charts to a new chart or an existing chart that doesn't say [Group]. How can I say my chart as an .xls worksheet without the word [Group] at the end. I am using Excel 97 SR-2. Thank you. ...

Restoring a value
In the code below, I've attempted to check a value entered by the user and restore the original value if what was entered exceeds the maximum for the current application. So far, I've been unsuccessful in restoring what was saved at open time. Saving of the restored value (Me.ImageRatio = Ratio) using Me.Requery after the assignment statement gives a runtime error related to macro or function validation rule for the field. I have not set a validation rule in the property sheet for the control. What am I missing here? Bill ======(Application)==================== Option Compare Datab...

Passing info from unbound option group to table fields
Hello, I have an option group with two options. For one option (called signin), I have the option value set at 1, and for the other (called visit), the value is -1. I want to pass the value of the signin option (1) to a numeric field called "numSignIns" if that option is selected, and the value of the visit option (-1) to a yes/no field called "visit" if it is selected. Whatever option is NOT selected I'm assuming will not have any value passed, which is fine. I have the following SQL set up to add a record at the press of a button, and for the other fiel...

Group
I have a sheet that has rows and columns that are grouped. I need to protect rollup portion of the grouped rows. However, when I do that and protect the sheet, I can no longer group and ungroup. How can I allow the user to group and ungroup rows and columns but protect the grouped row? Example: row 4 is a rollup of MY DATA with the next 10 rows as supporting/detailed data. I have created a group so that I can contract 9 of the rows and show only the rollup MY DATA or expand it and show all the subordinate data. The formulas in the columns MY DATA are protected while the cells in the supporti...

stand-by server restore
I am currently installing Exchange 2003 to two identical member servers. In addition I have another identical server for recovery purposes. I'm using BackupExec 9 to backup Exchange databases. I'm familiar with the stand-by recovery server procedures, and have this server configured (identical OS/patches etc) to perform this role should it be required. However, is it possible to install Exchange 2003 on this server in an identical config to the other two servers (store name, path, virtual server config etc all identical) but with empty db stores? Then, should one of the ...

Event ID 8213 / error 0x80090005 after exchange restore
Did a "setup /disasterrecovery" to restore databases, this has been in the event logs since. The restore did not create a MSExchangeFBPublish key in the registry (which was there on the previous install). I re-created the key, however no dice - still get "System Attendant Service failed to create session for virtual machine MAILSERVER2. The error number is 0x80090005" in the application log every 10-20 minutes. Looked around on newgroups - appears others have had this problem. Anyone know a fix? Answered my own question - knowledgebase article on using ADSIedi...
