Quick Exchange question RE: Inter-server messaging

Am I correct in my thinking that when two exchange servers transfer messages to eachother - i.e. mail comes in on server1 for a mailbox that is stored on server2 - they use SMTP to transfer the messages?

If i'm wrong what protocol do they use to do this communication.

Removing last 5.5 server #3
I have upgraded our Exchange organization to 2003. All mailboxes, public folders, and connectors have been relocated to the new server and all is working well. I have worked through the kb article 822450 to remove the 5.5 server, but ran into a concerning issue when I tried to actually delete the old server. When I click delete, it processes normally, to make sure that the server is inaccessible, but then returns an odd message that raises several questions for me. The prompt states that there are over 300 mailboxes and gateways on the old server, and that they will be deleted with ...

PST backup utility question
Is there a limit to the number of PST files that the PST Backup utility will work with? I have a user who has (egad) 120 PST files OPEN in Outlook at once. Exchange, SMTP queues and firewall
Hi... We have been troubleshooting an issue with our firewall where it runs out of NAT ports and has to be rebooted. This started last Monday and sometimes it will be up for a few days, sometimes a few hours. We have looked and done the obvious...checked for viruses, changed passwords, unchecked "Allow users who authenticate to relay", applied all critical updates, checked with the firewall tech support, checked with Symantec, etc. It seems that outbound connections are being opened but never closed, so ultimately we run out of NAT ports and then cannot connect to the internet. ...

Is there a best practices FAQ, for using Volume Shadow Copy with Exchange 2003 databases?
We have Exchange 2003 Enterprise running on Windows 2003 Standard. I would like to start taking 'snapshots' of the log and database volumes regularly (4 times daily), as a way to do immediate interval restores of our Exchange DBs rather than having to dump from tape. Is there a best practices document, for doing this? Thanks in advance. NTBackup does not do snapshots of Exchange. You would need to find a 3rd party backup product that supports that. -- Ben Winzenz Exchange MVP MessageOne "Robert Gordon" <Robert.Gordon@nospam.dslextreme.com> wrote in message ...

Exchange and base64 attachment
Hi We have an SMTP client, that sends e-mail with attached files. The attachment is sent as octet-stream, and with base64 encoding. We are sending these e-mails using different e-mail servers. If I increase the starting time of the search past 2:39am, I see all messages, regardless of how they are sent. With our backup situation I lost only 1 day of mail but wich is very important. Is there any way of recovering some mail from the recovered folders from the crashed HD. You will be able to recover mail from the last backup tape. Any mail sent your your domian after the crash is most likely being queued on ther SMTP Servers.
