Offline Defrag of Exchange 2003 not representing database size cor

I have Exchange 2003 Sp2 installed. I need to do an offline defrag due to
database size. My database should be 15Gb smaller than the actual database
size.
When I run eseutil the defrag completes successfully but doesnt change the
file size. The online defrag run correctly but only free up 10-15Mb. Any
suggestions?

What makes you think it should be 15GB smaller than it is?

Well its more than double the size of each mailbox added together. I have
done a few offline defrags before SP2 was available which always brought the
database size back to the actual size of the mailboxes.

Look for an event 1221 in your application log. This is the true amount of
white space in the db. How does the amount indicated in 1221 compare to your
expectations?

Actually its not the true amount, but rather the minimum amount that
will be recovered!

I expect it to be half the size that is being represented now, i.e 15Gb
smaller. In Event 1221, there is usually only 10-15MB free.

What is your deleted item retention set to? You may need to set it to
0 temporarily and set a custom schedule so IS maintenance runs and
clears out those deleted items.

I had it set to 1 but have decreased it to 0 now but I have ticked the box
for nothing to be permanently deleted until it has been backed up. The IS
schedule is set to run every night. I will try again now that I have
decreased it to 0.
Thanks
