My Headers are Spam Like

I have an Exchange 5.5 server on NT domain, the headers on messages say:
received from <machine name>.<domain name> which is SERVERA.COMPANYB, and
some sites are rejecting our mail as spam.
I think it's a dns problem because SERVERA.COMPANYB doesn't resolve to
anything. Is there any way I can get a .COM into that header?

It's probably not that at all. Does your public IP address have a
reverse-lookup (PTR) in DNS? One way to look is to check out your domain at
www.dnsreport.com . Or you could be on a blacklist for some reason. My
Exchange 5.5 is rusty, but IIRC you should be able to specify a masquerade
domain - and/or forward all Internet mail to your ISP's SMTP server in your
internet mail service, which would bypass this issue entirely (unless your
domain name is on a blacklist).

However, if you have a single-label domain, note that it will cause you
problems far more severe than this when you go to Active Directory (which I
hope you're doing soon, as you're using unsupported versions now). One
article here:

Yes, it is a DNS issue- nothing reloves to servername.companyname
Yes, there should be a way to specify a masquerade
domain, that's what I'm trying to find out.
Yes, I will change the domain name to companyname.com when I go to AD.

This can be done in the Exchange System Manager. I'm not sure about
5.5, but here is how you change the domain you advertise yourself as in
your HELO messages to other servers in Exchange 2000, maybe it will
help....?

Open ESM.
Expand servers.
Expand your server in question.
Expand Protocols.
Expand SMTP.
Right-click the SMTP server, Choose properties.
Click the Delivery tabl and then the Advanced button.
Change the Masquerade domain to your current domain (whatever follows
the @ in your email address)
Change the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) to the name on your MX
record (i.e. mail.yourdomain.com).
apply and restart Exchange. Is it fixed?

Thank you, but 5.5 has the Internet Mail Connector, which doesn't have those
options.

You didn't answer the question. :)

Is the Exchange 5.5 server's IP address represented in your DNS by a
PTR record?

But there isn't, so you're going to spend a long time looking.

The IMS gets the name it uses in the Received: headers and Message-ID
headers from the PTR record. If there isn't one it may use WINS (if
your DNS is configured that way).

Why someone is trying to verify the name in a received header, and
bouncing mail because it's not resolvable, is a little bizarre. There
are many systems that use non-resolvable names (in the .local TLD, for
example).
