How to: find reason for rejected messages?

I'm trying to find the reason, why certain messages get rejected by our
exchange 2000 server. Is there a way to find out?

Scenario:
pullmail gets mails from pop3 mailboxes from, let's say
"internetmailserver.com" and puts it in our exchange server
"intranet.com". For most mails it works marvellous but for some mails
it just fails and I can only see (output of pullmail command):

....
1 messages waiting
<< +OK 8488322 octets
Message from: some.user@validdomain.com
                to: user@intranet.com
SMTP message rejected, reply
 OK
Unexpected response
rsion: 5.0.2195.6713 ready at Tue, 21 Feb 2006 18:19:21 +0100 from
smtp server
<< +OK Sayonara
....

So WHY does the exchange server reject this mail? I've disabled the
size limitations and all the filter options (globally and at the
virtual smtp server). I've tried logging everything but I don't get any
clue. The user@intranet.com address is valid and works fine with other
mails. The some.user@validdomain.com address is valid and works fine
usually. We're doing no reverse dns and no domain-checks otherwise.

I'm out of clues now and searching the internet didn't help... so I'd
be very glad if someone could help me out here.

I know, our setup is not recommended and not the best practise at all
but unfortunately we had to use it...

Thanks for all your help!

Who says Exchange rejected anything? It sure looks to me like pullmail
didn't understand the 220 SMTP banner from Exchange.

Stop using pullmail and use SMTP.

Well, as I was saying: I *know* it's not best practice. I know about
etrn/atrn, I know about DynDNS as MX, I know about custom methods with
finger (argh!) and I know about the problems of all these crippled mail
servers - heck, I know about SMTP, BUT: we simply can _not_ use it here
for various reasons.

I am just looking for good ideas how to solve my _current_ problem and
not how to set up a "real" mail server :)

Well, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help since it's a problem
with pullmail and not Exchange.

Thank you for trying to help, I just digged deeper and it seems that
there is a TCP/IP problem. I ditched pullmail and used mercury as an
in-between mailserver. This gives me a much better log. Unfortunately
the problem still exists. As you can see below, Exchange accepts the
mail but while transferring the data, the connection closes and I get
an "9: Socket write error 10053 (ECONNABORTED)" error. That's strange
because mercury and exchange are on the same machine so there's NO
network in between...

I disabled virus check programs, SpamAssassin and the lot but that
changed nothing.

Do you have an idea what could be the cause for this problem? Small
mails get transported well, only big mails seem to be affected (>2MB).
Hmm.

Here are the logs:

so why does exchange reset the connection?

Does the data go on one worksheet and then get referenced and inserted into the list of another worksheet? If so, how? I can't seem to get any answers by reading books on the subject.
