Exchange5.5 Spam filter

I have added a spam filter to my site, which is a W2k based program. I also
have a firewall to the internet which everything goes outbound. It seems
like some of my outbound mail is not going out through the spam filter.
Where in the Exchange5.5 do I direct all outbound mail to the Spam filter
first, which is Natted to an External IP address????
Thanks Randy

Randy:

I'll assume that the spam filter is an SMTP server also. In that case, if
you don't have one already, create an Internet Mail Service under Exchange
Administrator > <YOUR SITE NAME> > Connections. In the IMS Connections tab,
configure it to send all outbound mail through the spam filter. Set the cost
of that IMS lower than any other IMS so that all external SMTP mail should
pass through there first.

Martin

Martin:
We have 2 servers setup with NT4.0 SP6a, Exchange5.5 SP4 in this site.
We have been in the process of getting rid of the original server for a
couple of months, more pressing things have arisen. Anyway the original
server,(1) still has the IMS connector, yet all active mailboxes have been
moved to the new server, (2). This was successful, but we have not changed
all services over to the 2nd server. Can we change the IMS in the site to
the new server, as long as it is identical to the old one, without any
problems? Or can you have 2 IMS connectors. We are basically using the old
server as a depository for terminated employees, that we might need to
access their email from. Should we change certain responsabilities of the
original server to the second server for better performance??? The 2nd
server is a lot newer.
Thanks Randy

Randy:

You should be able to set up an IMS on each server. I would suggest that you
set up an IMS on the new server with the exact same settings as the old one,
then change the cost on the old IMS to a higher number than the old one.
After that, all external SMTP mail should go through the new server's IMS
since it has a lower cost. You should test this over the weekend in case
something goes wrong and you need to revert back to the old IMS. Shut down
the MS Exchange IMS service on the old server just to make sure it's not in
use at all. If all is working well for a week or so, then delete the old
IMS. Make sure that any internal applications that use SMTP point to the new
server and that the IMS on the new server allows those application servers
to use it.

Regarding your second question, yes, if the new server has newer and faster
hardware, I would definitely move all responsibilities over to it. This MS
KB regarding removing the first Exchange 5.5 server in a site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;152959 will guide
you on which services to move over to the new server. Also, move all your
mailboxes and PFs over to the new server and delete the PF replicas from the
old server. Make sure you follow the KB, because if the first server isn't
removed properly, it will cause some weird problems.

Martin

Since you know I have 2 email servers and a W2k server with Spam software
as an email & internet Gateway, under IMS properties, message delivery,
should I have "Forward all messages to host:" checked and put the IP address
of my Spam Gateway in that space, so that all internet mail is sent and
received through that gateway?? The "Transfer Mode" is set for Inbound &
Outbound now.
Thanks Randy

Yeah, for starters, leave everything at the default and just put the IP
address of the spam gateway in for "Forward all messages to host." Note,
this would only scan outbound SMTP mail for spam. If you want to scan
inbound SMTP mail for spam, then you will need to configure the spam gateway
to accept inbound SMTP mail for your domain and then forward it to your
Exchange server. You'll need to get the specifics for doing that from the
spam gateway vendor and your ISP.

Originator in 5.5 queue is <>
It looks like my exchange 5.5 server is being used for relays or something. When I check the queues in my IMC connector, there is invariably 10 to 20 messages all from originator <>. Any idea what is happening here and how I can prevent unauthorized relaying? I have read MS articles and gone through securing the server, but I must have missed something, or there is a larger problem. Thanks for your time, Aaron Most of the time these ndr's being sent back by your server as a result of a legitimate or SPAM being misaddressed to your domain. The <> sender is used to prevent m...

Macro to copy a VLOOKUP formula
Hello, I was wondering if somebody could help me with this macro… I have some data with a filter on, so that only the rows with blank cells are showing. I want to enter a VLOOKUP in the cell, and copy it down to all the blank cells. I tried just recording a macro, but when I run the macro it doesn’t work. Any ideas of how to do it? Moving Exchange 5.5 on NT4 to new Windows 2000 Server.
This is my first post and I'm hoping to get a little advise. Hi. I need to move Exchange 5.5 running on NT4 Server(BDC) onto a new machine running Windows 2000 Server. The new server must have the same name as the NT4 server. There is no AD in the network as yet. Just a PDC and a BDC(current NT4 Exchange box), plus several member NT and 2000 boxes. The new hardware is not compatible with NT4, so I am forced to load Windows 2000 Server onto it. I'm familiar with the process of backup, restore, mailbox moving etc, but I do not know the consequence of doing a backup of Exchange on ...

Exchange 5.5
We are in the process of planning a migration from Exchange 5.5 to 2003. As part of the pre migration tasks, I want to tidy up the number of public folders we have. I have a problem though. There are a number of public folders that show up, that were hosted on a now decomissioned (as we sold that part of the business) servers. So when you try to view the properties of the foler you can't, as the folder was on the old server. I then cannot delete the public folder! How can i get rid of the reference to the old public folder(s) on our current Exchange servers? Thanks On Thu, 1...

Can I move Exchange 5.5 SP2 mailboxes to Exchange 5.5 SP4?
Pardon me, I'm a newbie to Exchange. I have Exchange 5.5 SP2 running my mailboxes on an older NT 4.0 server SP5. I've put a new NT 4.0 server SP6a on-line. Can I run Exchange SP4 on this newer server and use exmerge to move my existing SP2 mailboxes over to this new server? What problems might arise? Thanks! Did you join the site? If so use Tools - Move Mailbox. If you didn't join the site then your likely to have different X500 DNs and have trouble replying to old messages if you go the Exmerge route. -- Hope that helps, Dan Townsend This posting is provided "AS IS&qu...
