Exchange Recovery through log files

Hi,

My costumer's server crashed last night, with faulty RAID hardware, and now
the windows 2000 server doesn't start. The costumer has no backup. :(

I reinstalled Windows (without formating), the data is all there, appears
intact.

Now I have a file priv1.edb that has 0 byte size and a lot of log files each
with 5meg in size on MBDATA. I tried to reinstall exchange and move (only)
the log files to the new MDBDATA folder, but when I try to mount store fails
with error: "the database files in the store are corrupted." ID no: c104173b

Then i went to c:\program files\exchsrv\mdbdata and run eseutil /r e00 and
got this error: Operation terminated with error -501 (JET_errLogFIleCorrupt,
Log file is corrupt)

Is there anyway to solve this problem, or should prepare my costumer for the
bad news?

Thanks
PGSousa

How did you reinstall windows without formatting? Do you mean you installed
another copy of windows 2000 on a separate partition and dual boot? What
exactly crashed in the hardware, the drives? If you have no backup and/or
no database files you better start preparing your bad news speech. Your
only saving grace is getting a copy of the database files from the crash.
Even then, you may not be safe if the crash corrupted your databases.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I reinstalled without formatting, but I copied exchange data before
reinstalling, to another computer. And yes, the crash corrupted the data. It
was something with RAID Controller. My hope was to rebuild priv1.edb through
log files but I ran an "eseutil /ml e00" and I see a lot of damaged files.
Too bad. :(

Thanks,
pgsousa

Yes save your log files! Since you have no backup you will need these
to replay all the transactions to your DB. Once you get your server up
and re-built, you can have your Exchange replay all these logs by
deleting your checkpoint file. Hopefully you're not missing any and can
go smoothly.

you "might" be able to recover most of the data from those copies using
something like Quest's Recovery Manager for Exchange...

Things are not looking good I am afraid.

You can actually recover an Exchange database with just the log files and no
backup.
This assumes that you have never backed up the IS though. The first log file
that is initialised contains the CreateDB (I can't remember if that is the
exact name for it) transaction. So in theory if you were to remove the DB
files and then run an eseutil /R it will recreate the DB and then run
through all the log files on the disk (Assuming none of them are corrupt of
course)

I have had a certain degree of success with Ontrack in the past. It might be
worth a shot but don't get your hopes up.

/Simon

restore public folder to Exchange 2003 server from backup copy of the Exchange 5.5 server
Hi, Recently a user deleted a folder witnin the Public Folders on the Exchange 2003 server. When I looked at a backup copy from the backup tape, I could not find the pub1.edb file in the MDBDATA folder. I am using Backup Exec. 8.6.
