Exchange backup failing! Backup exec 10d and Windows backup

Hi

I've got a 2 node active/passive Exchange 2003 cluster on Windows
Server 2003, all fully service packed up which so far has been backing
up just fine. I have 3 storage groups with several mailbox stores in
each.

I take a full backup on Friday night and Mon-Thu are incremental. Just
recently, the backup jobs for the information stores is failing on one
particular storage group. The backup exec 10.d error states:

e000030c - Exchange failed to return any log files when backing up the
database.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link
V-79-57344-780

But the V-79... link does not lead anywhere!

I've also tried using the inbuilt windows backup, and when trying to
backup that store get this failure:

Backup started on 30/11/2006 at 16:36.
The 'Microsoft Information Store' returned 'Error returned from an ESE
function call (d).

' from a call to 'HrESEBackupGetLogAndPatchFiles()' additional data
'-'The 'Microsoft Information Store' returned 'Functions called in an
invalid sequence.

' from a call to 'HrESEBackupClose()' additional data '-'
The operation was ended.

Does anyone know a way to solve this? The other two storage groups are
just fine, and I have recently gone through all mailbox stores with
eseutil and isinteg and again everything was backing up without
problem. Admittedly I haven't tried doing that again, but before I
resorted to taking the stores offline, I wondered if anyone else had a
solution to this problem?

Help!

thanks
Gavin

Reconsider the incremental backups. You'd have to string together a long
set of properly completed backups to do a restore. Best practice is to do a
full every night, because incremental Exchange backups aren't exactly the
same thing as they are with file backups.

I recommend that you call PSS since the problem occurs with NTBACKUP.

Hi Ed and Susan

Thanks for your replies.

Circular logging has not been enabled. And doing a full backup
everynight is not an option as it takes far too long.

Are there any other suggestions out there? As I say, this was working
just fine and I can't see that anything has been done/changed in order
to get this behaviour.

you might try getting a faster tape drive...I do full backups every night on
very large storage groups...what AV are you running? can you get your
incremental if you disable it, temporarily?

You're not backing up "mailboxes", are you? That is, you're not doing brick
backups, right? Those can take an awfully long time. If you're backing up
the "mailboxes", try stopping doing that and just back up the "Information
Store" object.

Hi Guys, thanks again for continued replies.

At the moment I am doing a brick backup over the weekend. But
currently the length of the backups isnt my concern, its the fact that
the log files arent being flushed. Have now gone through the databases
with eseutil and isinteg, and again run backups using veritas and NT
backup and again both jobs although backing up alot of data, end up
with errors and not clearing out the logs.

I have 2 other storage groups on the same server which backup perfectly!

It could be that some database in problematic storage group is
dismounted, preventing log removal.

GLOBALROOT Error on Exchange 2003
I setup protection for Exchange Server 2003 SP2 running on Win2K3 SP2. There are four information storage groups. I am protecting the server using DPM 2010 RC. All of the prerequisite steps were performed successfully. Two of the info storage groups (the small ones - 30GB) backup successfully. The two large info storage groups (125GB each) fail with the following alert message: DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy38\Exchsvr\MdbData\support\Support (ServerName)\Support.edb on ServerName.domain.com (ID 2033 Detai...

domain added then removed from exchange but emails still route to exchange ?
Hi, Was wondering if someone can explain this: added external domainA to accepted domains added domainA mail address to users mailbox (mx was not changed) sent email from mailbox/account/domainB (hosted on exchange server) to domainA , arrived in users mailbox on exchange as expected removed domainA from accepted domains removed domainA email address from users mailbox to domainA , arrived in users mailbox on exchange as expected, arrived in users mailbox, this was not expected. When using Outlook (domainB exchange accounts) and entering the email address user@domainA.co...

NOTE window off the screen
Just upgraded to GP 10 - everything has been fine - until now and this is minor... Used the NOTE window attached to POP docs and SOP docs earlier today, they open in minimized size. Now, when I click them, the NOTE tab shows at the bottom of my screen as though it is open but it is not visible. I right-click on the tab and "MAXIMIZE" and it comes up filling my whole screen, which is NOT what I want. If I right-click and minimize, or size, my mouse goes to the top of my monitor screen but there is nothing there. If I click the NOTE tab, I can "see a ghostly form" ...

Experian query failing
For the past week or so whenever I try to update my credit score in the Credit Center via the free Experian account I opened when I bought M04 Small Business it fails. I know Experian had some problems on their site about a week ago, but it seems to be up now. Anyone else having this problem or know the cause or solution? - J. I am also having that problem. >-----Original Message----- >For the past week or so whenever I try to update my >credit score in the Credit Center via the free Experian >account I opened when I bought M04 Small Business it >fails. Exchange Calendar Item vs. Outlook problem
Our Exchange 5.5 (SP4) server has what appears to be a corrupt calendar item for January 20, 2004. Those people who have this recurring(?) calendar item experience an Outlook lock up (CPU 100% running process outlook.exe) when accessing their calendar for that date and when syncing for offline Outlook use. This effects Outlook versions 2000 and 2002. Because the item can not be accessed from an Outlook client it can not be deleted. Is there a way to delete recurring calendar items from a specific date in the private data store? Is there an Outlook patch that prevents the CPU utilization p...

Exchange 2007 RSG and Isinteg
We are running exchange 2007 on a windows 2008 server, both are fully patched. We backup with Backup Exec 12.5, again fully patched. All of our backups finish without any problems. Our problem; when i restore a database backup to a RSG and then try to restore a mailbox i recieve errors telling me that the maxium number of corrupted messages has been reached. i tried moving the limit up, but i have to move the limit up to 5000 before it works and then i only get a few emails not the complete contents of the mailbox. After a bit of research i found a few similar cases. These were resolv...
